This book arose out of our experience of teaching the history of Australia during the Second World War at Deakin University. This revealed the need for a study in one volume of the various aspects of Australia's involvement in that conflicta study of where Australians fought and why; the impact of the war on domestic politics, society, and economy; the representation of the war in literature; and the changes wrought in Australia's place in and attitudes towards the world.
A number or people at Deakin contributed to the development or this book: especially, Frances Baensch, Ian Fox, Paul Schmidt, Doug Scobie and Penny Williams. Colleagues throughout Australia and overseas read drafts and offered encouragement and advice: Carl Bridge, Robin Gerster, Jeffrey Grey, Ross McMullin, Stuart Macintyre, A. W. Martin, Kay Saunders, Andrea Shimmen and Garry Woodard. Finally, we owe thanks to our families, particularly Diana, Caroline and Julia Beaumont who sometimes thought this book would take longer than the war.
