Preface and Acknowledgements
This book aims at enlarging knowledge on peace operations by creating bridges among different areas of research in the field. These areas are mostly those of the role of peace missions in the world political system, growth and performance of the European Union/ESDP operations, the new actors in peace and security operations, and the unfolding area of the responsibility to protect. Peace operations are complex courses of action due to many reasons. They involve actors in serious and tense relations; require different capabilities and resources; and cause heavy costs to communities and states. The contributors to this book share with the peace operation research community the appeal of dealing with the intricacies of organizing, improving, and spreading knowledge on this complex topic. They share as well the view that today multilateral intervention is the inescapable duty of the good-will states that believe that serious crises and conflicts make the world an inhospitable place. For this reason, these contributors want to increase the scientific knowledge of peace operations, and contribute to the better understanding of the current change of multilateral security. Each of the contributors acknowledges the tangible support of their academic institution in bringing to fruition their research projects. Comments and suggestions received from colleagues and participants at the conference panels in particular, the World International Studies Committee Conference in Ljubljana and the Fourth Pan-European Conference on EU Politics, organized by the ECPR Standing Group on the European Union at the University of Latvia in Riga in which the contributors have discussed their work over the last two years are also recognized.
