The Global Interdisciplinary Studies Series reflects a recognition that globalization is leading to fundamental changes in the world order, creating new imperatives and requiring new ways of understanding the international system. It is increasingly clear that the next century will be characterized by issues that transcend national and cultural boundaries, shaped by competitive forces and features of economic globalization yet to be fully evaluated and understood. Comparative and comprehensive in concept, this series explores the relationship between transnational and regional issues through the lens of widely applicable interdisciplinary methodologies and analytic models. The series consists of innovative monographs and collections of essays representing the best of contemporary research, designed to transcend disciplinary boundaries in seeking to better understand a globalizing world.

Foreword
The study of international relations is a challenging endeavour. Nevertheless, scholars attempt it by putting together divergent perspectives to achieve an objective world view to help policy planners to undertake fruitful initiatives at regional and global levels. An admirable attempt has been made in this book to study the complexities in international relations away from a traditional national perspective. Scholars from around the world have studied trends in the globalized world both evolutionary and revolutionary be they in the field of communications or financial transactions, educational standards or scientific developments, attempt by force or terror to set right perceived historical grievances. They have studied fault lines of religions, ethnicity and poverty cutting across national boundaries. Countries like India and China pose particular challenges to a political study, because they are developing fast while still manifesting traditional social and regional distortions among their huge populations.
The regional alliances and free trade areas have given rise to hopes for a post-national and post-Westphalia system of world governance, guided by issues of human rights, transparency, and good political conduct. At the same time, piracy in coastal areas or sea lanes, cross-border terrorism and internal insurgencies require determined and firm action by states, often blurring the boundaries of good conduct by states.
If this volume helps in a better understanding of the issues in todays world, the labour of so many scholars would be rewarded. We can then hope to leave a world free from rancour and grief for succeeding generations.

Introduction
The Westphalian system is characterized by the nation-state as the primary actor in the global arena. The contemporary period, however, has witnessed the increasing importance of non-state actors, and even individuals, as key players in international relations. In short, the range of actors and their ability to influence the distribution of power and, in the largest sense, the global order, has changed in response to historical imperatives that include, among other factors, ideologies, economic and trade structures, and technological developments. This volume examines the complex international system of the twenty-first century from a variety of perspectives. Incorporating both critical theoretical perspectives, as well as case studies, the chapters focus on broad trends, as well as micro-realities of a complex international system. The process of transformation and change of the international system has been an ongoing cumulative process. Many forces, including conflict, technological innovation, and communication have contributed to the creation of a trans-national world with political, economic, and social implications for all societies. Trans-nationalism functions both as an integrative factor and one which exposes the existing and the newly emerging divisions between societies and cultures and between nations and states. The chapters in this volume demonstrate that re-thinking fundamental assumptions, as well as theoretical and methodological premises is central to understanding the dynamics of interdependence.
