Grounds and Envelopes

Providing a source of vision for the revitalization of ground and envelope as spatial elements that can inform the search for embedded locally specific architectures, this book collects essays and projects that each contribute a particular element to what might constitute an integrated and richly nuanced approach to spatial organization. • RCR Arquitectes: Marquee at Les Cols Restaurant, Olot, Girona, Spain
  • Weiss/Manfredi: Seattle Art Museum: Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle, Washington, USA
  • Peter Eisenman: City of Culture of Galicia, Santiago de Compostela, Spain

  • Foreign Office Architects: Yokohama International Port Terminal, Yokohama, Japan
  • Nekton Studio: Turf City, Reykjavik, Iceland
  • Alvaro Siza: Swimming Pool, Lea da Palmeira, Portugal
  • Eduardo Souto de Moura: Braga Municipal Stadium, Braga, Portugal
  • MVRDV: Villa VPRO, Hilversum, The Netherlands
  • Bernard Tschumi: Le Fresnoy Art Centre, Tourcoing, France
  • OCEAN: World Centre for Human Concerns, New York City, USA
  • R&Sie(n): Spidernethewood, Nmes, France
  • Toyo Ito: Serpentine Pavilion, London, England
  • Enric Miralles and Carme Pins: Olympic Archery Range, Barcelona, Spain

  • Diller, Scofidio and Renfro: Blur Building, Swiss National Expo, Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland.

With an abundance of built and unbuilt key projects available, it is now possible to outline the contours of a new discourse. This book initiates a new beginning in this direction so that architecture can partake in the creation of heterogeneous space and culturally, socially and environmentally sustainable built environments.

We neutralize any and all our misgivings about the inroads of architecture on our lives with lame protests directed at nobody in particular. Part of our troubles result from the tendency to ascribe to architects or for that matter, to all specialists exceptional insight into problems of living when, in truth, most of them are concerned with problems of business and prestige.

Bernard Rudofsky

Introducing new measures wont improve the world ... changing attitude will.

Albert Schweitzer

To our mothers Betty Ann and Irmgard, our late fathers Paul and Ulrich, our spouses Sarah and Defne and children Felix and Emma, and to our friends. And to all those who share our conviction that architecture can do much better than it presently does.

The interests and concerns that underlie the thoughts offered in this book have been with us and at the root of our work and inquiry for quite some time. It all started in the early 1990s when a lot more seemed possible in architecture from both a critical and projective perspective than it may seem today. We embarked upon putting this book together because of the way architecture appears to have developed by giving into profit escalation, formal caprioles and the humongous yet pointless gesturing that marks booming locations where everything seems to go, as well as due to what we perceive as an acute lack of alternative approaches to architectural design that actually deserve this description.

Our endeavour was made possible by the enthusiasm and tireless efforts of Francesca Ford, Commissioning Editor for Architecture books at Routledge, and by the generous contributions of the practices whose works are portrayed here within. Our sincere gratitude belongs to them, as well as to the eminent thinkers whose in- and foresights have had considerable impact upon our approach to the matter at hand. This includes especially David Leatherbarrow who helped us generously with many aspects of this book. Furthermore we would like to thank the OCEAN Design Research Association in the context of which Grounds and Envelopes is a key research area, and our friends and collaborators in OCEAN, in particular Pavel Hladik, Christian Cordua Hermansen and Sren S. Srensen, for generously supporting our endeavour. Defne Sungurolu Hensel was a key collaborator in developing approaches to notions such as extended thresholds, auxiliary architectures and the analysis of historical projects from a performance perspective. Thanks also go to Sibyl Trigg and Ricardo Rodrigues Ferreira who helped in the redrawing of an ever-evolving list of projects.
