The readings in The Politics of Race: African Americans and the Political System examine the major issues involving race and American politics. This book can be used in courses on American government, racial politics, urban politics, black studies, American studies, public policy, and political ideology. The purpose of this volume is to add a racial element to the study of American politics.
This book features readings from some of the most noteworthy students of American politics, including Midge Decter, Charles V. Hamilton, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Paul E. Peterson, Adolph Reed Jr., Lani Guinier, Bill Clinton, Bill Bradley, and Thomas Byrne Edsall. There are also reports from the Kerner Commission and the NAACP. I have selected readings from political scientists, sociologists, historians, journalists, legal scholars, and public officials. The authors represent a broad range of ideological, methodological, and theoretical perspectives.
The readings examine a variety of topics: blacks in American history, the role of the black vote in recent presidential elections, race-related Supreme Court rulings, blacks and the Democratic Party, blacks and the Republican Party, black conservatism, Afrocentrism, multiculturalism, black interest groups, African American women, the role of race in postwar presidential administrations, black mayors, black state legislators, the urban underclass, and the Los Angeles riots. The readings also highlight a number of prominent individuals, including Malcolm X, Louis Farrakhan, Thomas Sowell, Doug Wilder, Tom Bradley, Rodney King, and black members of Congress.
