This book arose out of the final meeting of the Study Group on the World Political Map held as part of the 26th International Geographical Union Congress in Perth, Western Australia, in August 1988. The Perth Conference on the theme of Border Landscapes took place prior to the main IGU Congress in Sydney at which the Group obtained Commission status, and the book is therefore the first to be published on behalf of the new Commission.
Needless to say, we are grateful to many people for their assistance and encouragement in bringing this book to fruition. First, we are indebted to all of the contributors who cheerfully corresponded over a fairly lengthy period. Second, we would like to thank all of those who helped to make the Perth Conference a success. Most, but not all of the present authors participated in the Perth meetings. However, not all Perth participants are represented in this volume and we would therefore like to acknowledge the valuable contribution made at the Conference by Sandy Crosbie, Harm De Blij, Jim Forrest, Verena Meier, Hiroshi Tanabe, Martyn Webb and Faye Whitfield. The following individuals and organisations also helped in various other ways to make the Perth Conference a success and deserve our sincere thanks Chris Berry, Ian Cowie, Patric de Villiers, Viv Forbes, Joseph Gentilli, Harry Grainger, Lindsay Hunter, Charles Johnston, Barrie Melotte, Don Newman, Bob Pearce, MLA, Brian Shaw, Les Smith, Geoff Ward and Oren Yiftachel; Nedlands College of Advanced Education; WA State Planning Commission; Town and Country Building Society; University of WA; Transperth (including one unforgettable bus driver!); Fremantle City Planning Department; WA Football League; Kingswood College; Bond Brewing; Houghtons Wines and Ansett Airlines. Hilary Bailey and Chris Dickinson (Perth) gave cheerful secretarial help under pressure and Guy Foster (Perth) and Jerry Ulrey (Columbia) provided timely cartographic assistance. The Davis family (UK) and LSE Geography Department helped in the latter stages. Finally, we would like to sincerely thank the members of the IGU Commission on the World Political Map, especially its Chair, David Knight, for continued support and encouragement.
