Introduction

In the beginning was the word.

While driving my kids to class one fine Friday morning, something that, as homeschoolers, we did only once a week, I embarked on a discussion of wealth.

How do you think wealth is created, children? Do you know?

Well, you have to get a job, first, Shane says from the back seat. He is fifteen and just starting to come into his own as a young man.

Thats a way to start to accumulate wealth, yes, but it isnt how wealth is generated, necessarily. Let me explain. Wealth comes from the transaction. I paused for dramatic effect.

What do you mean, transaction?

Thank you for asking. I mean that when you bought your iPad, with your money, that was a transaction. Mind you, it has to be freely given, like the free market. But you freely traded money for the iPad because, ideally speaking, the iPad is worth a lot more to you than that money was to you. Its a whole world of information and a very useful tool, nest-ce pas?

Octavia, twelve, riding shotgun, nods and waits.

And the store took your money because... , why? They have a ton of those iPads, but the money means much more to them than holding onto their stock of iPads, right?

She giggles. Of course.

Whos wealthier?

Silence, as they think it through.

Both of them! Shane pipes up from behind us. Both sides got what they wanted, so they are both, in a way, wealthier, right?

Exactly! Its like magicbut it has to be free. It cant be coerced, because then it doesnt work, because wealth is actually a very personal thing. Shane, you love your 3D printer, so with that, you feel really wealthy. But I wouldnt want one of those, so I would feel poor if I had that instead of, say, my laptop.

Right! And I prefer having my art supplies than that printer, or a calculator, or pretty much anything else. And I spend a lot of the money I earn on those things, because they make me happy.

Another great point, Tave, because money doesnt provide happiness, but the things you can exchange it for can certainly help. I smiled. I loved these long drives with my kids, even if I had to force the conversation from time to time. Kids are like puzzles that we, as parents, need to pour over for lengths of time to figure out.

So, Tave, you asked me before why we need to go to class, because you say you dont really enjoy spending the time with the other kids.

Theyre just kind of juvenile, and Id rather be doing my artwork.

I get that, but we go to seminar once a week for the conversation. We had joined a national cooperative homeschool group called Classical Conversations for the group dynamic and the classical style of education, which provides a conversational component to the study of literature, the arts, mathematics, and all the disciplines. We pursue the Socratic method, which is a form of argumentative dialogue between individuals in the quest for truth, understanding, and education. One of the primary focuses in a Socratic dialogue is the definition of terms.

You cant just live in a bubble, by yourself. We trade thoughts on the books and what we are studying because it is in the free exchange that wealth is created. And, while we vaguely understand that wealth is sort of metaphysical, because its personal to each individual, intelligence is as well. Knowledge, they say, is power (like wealth, incidentally), and so, to exchange knowledge and trade ideas in a transactional setting, like this class, is a way to build your... your smarts savings account.

Mom. My kids think my puns are dumb. I dont really care. I think theyre funny.

We engage in the free exchange of ideassomething we lovingly refer to as freedom of speechin order to build upon the past and create even greater prosperity for the future, just as in the marketplace of goods and services. Only the intellectual marketplace is for ideas. The United States not only created the greatest manufacturing and industrial engine of the world, but also, through our uniquely refined patent system, we generated a secure exchange in which ideas could flourish while being protected, and people could freely trade thoughts and concepts, new philosophies and theories, so that anyone might be able to contribute if they were willing to engage in thought.

Now, we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that system shaping a free marketplace of thoughts should endure. On college campuses, particular speakers are banned, rejected by leftists, and courses taught by professors insist on a groupthink mentality that allows for no entertainment of ideas foreign to the ones already accepted. Of course, this is extraordinarily dangerous.

Take, for instance, the Lefts insistence that global climate change is both human caused and dangerous to the survival of the planet and that anyone or any statistic that disagrees with those notions must be not only wrong but also ignored, nay, silenced. Evidence clearly shows that the climate has changed from what it has been in the past. What is it about todays global climate that is perfect and must be preserved at all cost? (And, by all cost, Im referring to the tremendously destructive Green New Deal.)

But disagree at your own peril. Leftist ideologues have no tolerance for dissenting ideas.

The Lefts insistence on shutting down discourse is a direct attack on prosperity. The Left hates wealth. It is only via the free exchange of research and scientific advancements that we have progressed through history. But the Left, and now that is a descriptor, too, for Democrats, rejects freedom of speech and freedom of ideas. Your ideas must conform, or you will be canceled.

We see this in the ridiculous discrimination and sham trial of Brett Kavanaugh, while Joe Bidens accuser, who is more reliable, more recent, and has several corroborating witnesses (to Dr. Blasey Fords zero) is silenced by Democrats and the leftist media. They insist on the silent treatment for everything with which they disagree, which might be fine if they actually knew things or promoted facts. But they dont. They make things up and then defend them to the death, all while refusing to learn anything substantial, because it might upset the delicate balance they maintain between their lies and their desires.
