INTRODUCTION

My wish for you is that you continue. Continue to be who and how you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness.

Maya Angelou

F IRST, thank you for picking up this book. In doing so, you have shown that you b elieve that kindness matters .

You may already know how the power of kindness can improve your life and the lives of others within your influence. But do you know about the secret meaning of kindness or the hidden power of kindness?

Over the course of this book, well unpack what makes kind people tick, and examine exactly how kindness affects both those who offer it, and those who receive it. Youll be provided with a rubric, a dedicated toolset, to assess exactly where in your life you are most (and least) kind. By coming to a fuller understanding of your own personal kindness and discovering new ways and places in life to be kind, youll come to the end of this book with a newfound empowerment to make the world a better place.

By the time you reach the Kindness Quotient Post Assessment, measuring everything youve learned along the way, youll know precisely where you rank. Youll have specific areas for improvement, and a knowledge of where you can provide a shining example to everyone within your influence.

After finishing this book, you will know the true meaning of kindness, the benefits of choosing kindness, and so much more. Youll know the difference between kindness with condition and unconditional kindness, be able to decrypt the childhood messages that interfere with kindness and know the nine foundational principles for practicing kindness.

Knowing your Kindness Quotient will improve your life because it equips you to best focus your energy on the areas where you can improve. In so doing, youll be better equipped to deliberately choose a kind response rather than reacting in emotion to every challenging person and situation that arises.

The best part about making the effort to raise your KQ score is that consistent practice will eventually lead to the kindest responses coming nearly effortlessly. Even if you do not yet consider yourself a kind person, kindness can become your natural inclination. And when that happens, you will have more happiness and peace than you ever thought possible!

THE REAL MEANING OF KINDNESS

W HAT do you think of when you hear the word kindness? Do you think of kindness as a quick gesturelike saying bless you when someone sneezes? Or do you think of kindness as a character trait, the presence or absence of which speaks volumes about a person?

Think of the kindest person you know. Do you respect that person? Do you admire him or her? Do you aspire to be like that person?

These may seem like silly questions. After all, doesnt everyone like the kind people in their lives?

KINDNESS FACTOR:
Authentic kindness is an accurate indicator of character.

You may be surprised to learn that some people do not respect and admire people who are kind. Rather, they see them as weak or feckless, someone to be disregarded. They make the mistake of thinking that people who are kind are meek or defenseless.

While it may be true that meek people tend to be kind and that people who seem weak are not usually abrasive (and therefore appear to be kind), kindness is not synonymous with weakness or meekness. The reality is that it takes incredible strength to be authentically kind, especially when kindness is to be given to those who behave badly, and who least deserve the benefits of a deliberate act of kindness.

There are those who strive for what they consider to be success at all costs, whether it be success in their career or their cause; who look right through the kind souls in their midst. But by doing so, theyre losing out greatly, because its the kind souls who slowly, deliberately, and often quietly, change the world.
