Anna was the daughter of Jeremiah Smiley(1802-1885) and Maria Harlow (December 16,1804-March 9, 1895). AnnaMaria Smileys siblings were Juliette Plaisted Smiley (June 22,1829-September 2, 1913), William Wallace Smiley (1831-1885),Leander Smiley (1833-1854), Ira B. Smiley (1835-1909), CharlesWesley Smiley (1837-1914), Bradbury M. Smiley (1839-1842) andGeorge Cabbot Smiley (1844-1859). Anna Maria Smiley was fromSidney, Maine as were both of her parents. When she was nine yearsof age the 1850 United States Census tells us that Anna and herfamily lived in Albion, Kennebec County, Maine. Twenty yearsearlier, at age 58, he owned farmland in Sidney that was valued at$2,000. His personal estate amounted to $400. Maria Harlow Smileyroomed at E.M. Springers in Newton, MA, in 1887. She was then awidow, as Jeremiah Smiley had died in Sidney in 1885. Anna MariaSmiley Springer, the maternal great grandmother of Linda SusanBoreman, died in Washington, D.C. on June 8, 1928. She was buriedin Newton, MA on June 10, 1928. Elestus Springer Figure 12 Springer Family Crest wasborn in Maine, the son of farmer Stephen Springer Jr. (1811-October14, 1883) and Catherine R. Moore Springer (February 11, 1815-1877).As a youth of 13, Elestus lived with his parents and his brother,Marcellus Patten Springer (1848-July 11, 1918). The Springer homewas in Sidney, Maine. Stephen Springer Jr., owned real estate thatwas valued at $700 in August 1850. Elestus' grandfather, StephenSpringer Sr. owned farmland that was worth $1,500. Both Stephen Sr.and Stephen Jr., were Maine natives. Stephen Springer Jr. died inNewton, Massachusetts on October 14, 1883. He lived in Sidney, MEas late as June 1870. The 1870 United States Census states that hewas 58, a property owner and a farmer. His real estate amounted to$1,200 and his personal estate was valued at $800 in 1870.Catherine Moore Springer died in Sidney on September 23, 1877.Elestus Springer was a merchant who became a Mason. In June1900 Elestus Springer worked in the manufacturing of clocks. Helived with his family in Kenrick Park. Figure 15 Durant-Kenrick House,Newton, MA Elestus' headed the Springer Bros. Store in Boston. Hewas a merchant there for more than thirty years. He traveledthroughout the United States and crossed the Atlantic Ocean twelvetimes. Elestus Martin Springer was listed in Who's Who in NewEngland. The Springer family farm had been in the family for about200 years by 1927. Elestus' daughter, Anna Fanny Springer Trageny, the maternalgreat-grandmother of Linda Susan Boreman, was a schoolgirl in 1900.She was 13. She had a sister named Ethel M. Springer Radford(September 16, 1882-August 3, 1962). Ethel was born in Glenwood,Aroostook County, ME, and she died in Lewiston, Androscoggin, ME.Her parents lived with her at her 1909 19th Street home inWashington at the time Elestus Springer turned 90 years old, onJanuary 18, 1927. Ethel was employed as an assistant probationofficer at the Junvenile Court. Her sister, Fanny, and her husbandJoseph Trageny, lived at the Springer farm in Sidney, ME in 1927.Ethel's brother, Clarence E. Springer, was living in Seattle,Washington. On the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary, inFebruary 1926, Elestus Springer was presented with a poem writtenby his wife Anna. It ended as follows, Forlike a story well nigh told, Must seem our lives, now we are old,How like a bright and pleasant dream, Those lives of ours are madeto seem, As we blot out past hopes and fears, And rejoice to greetour fifty years, And still, with eyes offaith, can see, Heaven's morning break, earth's shadowsflee. Ethel Springer married Ansel WilliamRadford (born 1874) in Oakfield, ME on February 3, 1920. Ethel was36 at the time and she was divorced. It was also the secondmarriage for widower Ansel Radford. Elestus Martin Springer died inWashington, D.C. on January 17, 1928. 90 years of age when hepassed away, he was buried in Newton, MA, on January 19. Hisdaughter, Fanny Elestine Springer Trageny, died an untimely deathat 43 on July 30, 1929. She is buried in the Springer Cemetery inSidney, ME. Fanny's mother, Anna Maria Springer, died young also. She passed awayin Salem, Salem County, New Jersey on August 27, 1867. She was 43.The future mother of Linda Susan Boreman, Dorothy Trageny, had anolder brother named Albert Trageny (born 1912). In January 1920 theUnited States Census records the Trageny family living on NewarkAvenue in Ward 10 of Jersey City.
