Pavel K. Baev is a Senior Researcher at the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) and the Editor of Security Dialogue. Dr Baev graduated from the Moscow State University in 1979 with an MA in Economic and Political Geography. From 1979 to 1988 he worked in a research institute in the USSR Ministry of Defense. In 1988 he gained a PhD in International Relations from the Institute of USA and Canada, USSR Academy of Sciences. From summer 1988 to autumn 1992 he worked in the newly created Institute of Europe, Moscow as Senior Researcher and Head of Section for Military-Political Studies. He has been with PRIO since October 1992. He held the NATO Democratic Institutions Fellowship for 199496. He is the author of several books, among them The Russian Army in a Time of Troubles (1996) and Russias Policies in the Caucasus (1997). His articles on the Russian military posture, Russian-European relations, peacekeeping, and conflict management in Europe have appeared in European Security, International Peacekeeping, Janes Intelligence Review, Journal of Peace Research, Journal of Slavic Military Studies, Transitions, and The World Today.
Stephen J. Blank is Douglas MacArthur Research Professor, Strategic Studies Institute, US Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, PA. Dr Blank is the author, editor or co-editor of numerous publications on Soviet, Russian, East European, and Commonwealth of Independent States security issues. His books include Imperial Decline: Russias ChangingPosition in Asia and The Sorcerer as Apprentice: Stalins Commissariat of Nationalities, 19171924. His current research includes the revolution in military affairs (RMA) and its impact on Russia, Russian arms control and nuclear strategy, and Russian strategy and policy in East Asia and the Pacific basin. Blank received his PhD in history from the University of Chicago.
Yelizaveta Bogoslovskaya is on the Faculty of Journalism, Leningrad University and is a journalist for St Petersburg Chas Pik. She supports the work of the non-governmental human rights organization, Soldiers Mothers of St Petersburg, committed to investigating human rights abuses in the Russian armed forces and to assisting the victims of illegal actions.
Stephen J. Cimbala is Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Penn State University and teaches at the universitys Delaware County Campus, Media, Pennsylvania. Dr Cimbala has contributed to the literature of national security studies, arms control, defense policy, intelligence, and military history for more than 25 years. His recent books include
