INTRODUCTION

A career as a systems administrator begins with an interest in computer technology. If youre a computer savvy teen whos interested in how computers work and how they can help solve problems in the workplace and the world, a career as a systems administrator might be for you.

Becoming a systems administrator takes work; no one starts an IT career as a systems administrator. If thats your goal, youll need preparation through high school classes, extracurricular activities, and other computer-related experiences. Youll also need college or other professional training and work experience.

One systems administrator in Kansas began his career when he was still in college. He already had a bit of tinkering with computers under his belt. That helped him get a work-study job in the IT department at his college. Work-study is a federal program that provides part-time jobs to help college students pay education expenses. He worked with end users and got experience troubleshooting problems.

At the time, they ran a Novell network with Windows 98 on all student computers. A few machines had Windows XP, but they were few and far between. He was responsible for all computers, servers, network gear (including wireless access points), and what they called S-Net, the student network. The experience was invaluable, and it set him up for a career in technology.

Systems administrators need to understand the inner workings of computers and other system devices in order to keep equipment functioning well and serve the needs of the business.

After college, he took a factory job at a manufacturing plant. The pay was better, but the work was hard. After about six months, he went to the assistant plant manager to quit. Before he started talking, however, the manager told him that the sole IT guy at the plant needed a hand. The manager offered the future systems administrator a job as an IT specialist. It was a good fit. On the new job, he was exposed to basic server administration, networking concepts, and inventory tracking systems.

In todays workplace nearly every business has information technology needs. Individuals with computer skills can find job openings among a wide variety of industries.

Only a few months later, rumors flew about the possibility of the plant shutting down. He immediately began looking for a new position. Within a few weeks, he got a job as an assistant systems administrator with a mid-sized banking software company. Because the company was relatively small, he gained experience with both network and systems duties. He learned about administration of the UNIX operating system, ATM communications, web development, network load balancing, server hardware, and more. Five years later, the company needed to cut expenses. Since he lacked seniority on the team, he was one of the first to get laid off.

He soon found freelance consulting jobs doing systems administration for a variety of clients. That led to a job with a global insurance company. Eventually he was promoted to senior systems engineer. He attributes his success to his wide experience with different types of companies and different computer and network systems. Despite company layoffs and closings, his skills were always in demand and easily transferred to other employers.

Although this is only one IT professionals journey, his story is typical in the IT industry. If you think you might like to follow in his footsteps, this book will show you how.

WHAT IS IT?

T he worlds businesses, governments, and organizations need you! Already, employers are having trouble finding qualified workers to fill nearly 4 million existing jobs. IT involves managing, storing, and processing information by using hardware, operating systems, software, databases, analysis, and research. This fast-growing industry needs workers to perform a wide variety of tasks, and salaries are high. The US Department of Labor reports that as of May 2015, the median annual wage for all computer and information technology occupations was 77 percent higher than the median wage for all occupations. Median wage is the middle amount on a list of all the wages for all jobs in the IT field or for all jobs in the United States. Half the jobs pay less and half the jobs pay more.

Demand for information technology workers is high and should continue to grow as firms invest in newer, faster technology and mobile networks. According to the US Department of Labor, the number of IT jobs will grow by nearly a half million between 2014 and 2024. The 12 percent increase is higher than the rate expected for all other jobs.
