Electrifying
offers clarifying and immediately useful information to women and men about their mental and emotional conditioning in this society. It is electrifying because it connects immediately with persons experience and illuminates it.
The Rev. Joan Bates Forsberg,
Yale University Divinity School
Crucial
This electrifying book is crucial for understanding the current dynamics of womens struggles to participate fully in the church and society. Recommended for study for annual conference commissions and local churches (women and men).
The United Methodist Church

of Women
Definitive
crosses age barriers as well as gender and could well become the definitive work in personality theory so long dominated by Freudian psychology.
Susan T. Givens,
Kenyon College
Comforting
What a blessing it is to have spelled out so succinctly in book form the theory that it isnt wrong to be female. It is comforting to turn to this book and find that the frustrations imposed by the White Male System on my newly developing sense of rightness in the Female System can be explained in such a non-threatening fashion.
Kay Sandmeier,
housewife and community leader
Incisive
This book is a remarkable combination of rich perceptions and incisive observations based on extensive clinical experience. It discusses women and men and their interactions with warmth, wit, intelligence, and humanity! It will enable many women, for the first time, to articulate previously vague but disconcerting feelings. Its direct and genuine message hits the reader between the ribs.
Phyllis Katz, Ph.D.,
Institute for Research Problems
Optimistic
Womens Reality extracts the values and principles of female culture from their embeddedness in the general norms of our society, and it holds out such a positive, important, and optimistic vision for all of us that we might build an androgynous society.
Alice G. Sargent, Ed.D.,
author of Beyond Sex Roles
Life-changing
Womens Reality is a life-changing book. Mothers and ministers, sales representatives and social workers, indeed anyone who works with people will find it helpful in analyzing the world as it too often is and in learning to live in a more creative and healthy way.
Nancy A. Hardesty,
author of All Were Meant to Be
Important
This is the only book in five years whose author I personally tracked down because her book is such an important addition to the career womans understanding. the ambitious working woman who feels she has never suffered from gender discrimination will be appalled at her naivet after she reads Womens Reality .

It is with great pride and pleasure that I introduce this ten-year anniversary edition of Womens Reality . In its original form, this book has sold over 300,000 copies, almost completely by word of mouth. It has been described as a classic, an underground bestseller, and a publishing phenomenon. Many men and women write that because of this book, I no longer feel crazy.
My thinking and perceptions have evolved since the initial publication of Womens Reality , and surprisingly, most of the ideas in the book ring as true today as they did then. There is just one glaring exception. I was in my fairness phase when I wrote Womens Reality , and I kept saying that the Emerging Female System and the White Male System were different, but equal.
Now, I realize that the Reactive Female System and the White Male System are just two colluding sides of what I now call the Addictive System, and that the Addictive System does not support life and living.
The Emerging Female System, on the other hand, is not just a female system per se (although women seem to have retained a closer relationship to this system). It is a system that I now call the Living Process System, which is life-supporting and life-sustaining. The White Male System (Addictive System) is destructive to both men and women and the planet as a whole.
Fairness has to end when it obscures the truth.
This book is about a realitya reality perceived, explored, and expressed by women whenever they are free to do so without fear. It is about who we are as women. When we understand and accept who we are, we become in turn more understandable and accepted.
This book has three purposes: liberation, sharing, and communication. It is intended to liberate women from an unnecessary oppression based on myths. It is intended to share and legitimate what all women knowsome of which they are willing to admit to themselves, and some of which they are willing to admit to others. It is intended to communicate in the female idiom. Women rarely have an opportunity to read a book written in their idiom. This experience is important for self-validation and growth. It is important to the development of self-esteem and self-worth. Since women live in a foreign culture, they seldom have the experience of receiving approval and validation by the authoritiespeople whose ideas and opinions appear in print. That is the gift of this book. Simply because it exists, it validates and confirms femaleness in this culture. It expresses a reality of which many women know but are not always awarethat of being in a culture but not of it.
I wrote this book because I had to. Much of it is not new or even original; rather, it is the result of other voices speaking through me. I have spent over a decade listening to womenand menin intense situations, including individual therapy sessions, groups, and workshops, and this book embodies many of the things they have thought and said. The material in it has come together slowly over a period of years. I have presented parts of in in various forms around the United States and Canada, and it has become an affirmation to womenand menof their experience in this culture and what it means.
