A New Kind of Diversity gives stirring reflections of the past generations and a glimpse into future generations. Dr. Elmore provides sound advice for what leaders must do to build strong, collaborative, intergenerational teams at work. This wonderfully written book captures his leadership experiences, expertise, and wisdom as he identifies the characteristics and contributions of each generation, lessons learned from each generation, and steps for connecting the various generations in an organization. He points out that each generation brings their differences in personal opinions, personal assumptions, and personal demands, and effective leaders must identify these differences within each team member. While this work is hard, it is important that seasoned, experienced leaders must pass wisdom on to the young so that they can then surpass us by standing on our shoulders. Dr. Elmore is an inspirational leader and mentor to many, helping us to think about this new kind of diversity. Learning how we can work with the many generations in our organizations will make us more effective leaders and will help us build leaders within each generation. I highly recommend this book to all leaders and their teams. It is not only about generations, memories, and experiences but also how we can use these experiences to build a better future in our workplaces.

Tim Elmore has done it again! I found myself thinking deeply about how the various generationsfrom our student-athletes, coaches, staff, and administratorscould benefit from understanding one another better. This book has ideas and strategies to achieve just that and can be a game changer if you share this same goal.

A New Kind of Diversity is a must-read! Tim Elmore has so eloquently addressed an issue that so often gets neglected. As a Chief People and DEI Officer, I believe we need to focus on all dimensions of diversity and inclusion, including the various generations that make up todays workforce. Tim Elmore has an innate way of cutting through theories about generations to get to the core of what helps a leader empower all team members to operate at their best.

Many from my generation have retired. Those of us who continue working need to focus our attention on helping younger generations stand on our shoulders to gain perspective and learn from our mistakes and successes. The book youre holding in your hands will give you a jump-start on this goal. Tim Elmore has given his life to helping generations connect.

If you think youre smarter than the previous generation, consider this: Fifty years ago, the owners manual of a car showed you how to adjust the valves. Today, it warns you not to drink the contents of the battery.

FOREWORD
John C. Maxwell
O VER THE LAST FIVE YEARS, some questions Ive been asked often are: How do I manage my youngest team members? They join our team with very different attitudes and work ethics than our veteran team members do, and theyre affecting our culture. What should I do?
On the other hand, younger audiences are asking similar questions from their perspectives: How do I show respect for my boss when I know there are better ways to manage our team? He doesnt seem to get me, and sometimes I wonder if I really fit in here. What should I do?
As I speak across the country and around the world, Ive noticed this is a global challenge. Older and younger generations working on a team can feel like a tug-of-war. Lines are drawn in the sand on how to get things done, and working together can be difficult. Thats why Im so glad my friend Tim Elmore wrote A New Kind of Diversity.
The leadership environment we are in today is more polarizing than ever, at least in my lifetime. We have a choice: will we allow the environment to determine our leadership, or will we intentionally change the environment? The good news isthere are strengths in our differences. Its a leaders job to find those strengths and maximize them.
Lets consider some strengths that can be found in an intergenerational team:
- The wisdom of the Builder generation.
- The stories of the Baby Boomer generation.
- The pragmatism of Generation X.
- The idealism of Millennials.
- The innovative mindset of Generation Z.
Are you maximizing the strengths of the individuals on your team? It all starts with your perspective on others. Anybody can see weaknesses, mistakes, and shortcomings. Seeing good things is harder, but thats the difference between anybody and a great leader.
A New Kind of Diversity will accomplish a few goals.
First, it will enable you to understand your younger and older colleagues working alongside you. In these pages youll read insights that are both personal and sociological about what shaped each of the last five generations. Youll pick up cues that you might never gain by talking to someone from each of these populations. While everyone has a unique personality and no one wants to be stereotyped, Tim Elmore reminds us: our goal is not to stereotype but to understand. This book helps you recognize the narrative each generation tends to possess.
