As series editor of the American Psychological Associations (APAs) Division 45 (Society for the Psychological Study of Culture, Ethnicity, and Race) Cultural, Racial, and Ethnic Psychology Book Series, it is my pleasure to introduce the latest volume in the series: Liberation Psychology: Theory, Method, Practice, and Social Justice, edited by Lillian Comas-Daz and Edil Torres Rivera.
The impetus for the series came from my presidential theme for Division 45, which focused on Strengthening Our Science to Improve Our Practice. Given the increasing attention to racial and ethnic minority issues within the discipline of psychology, I argued that we needed to both generate more research and get the existing research known. From the Supplement to the Surgeon Generals Report on Mental Health to the Unequal Treatment report from the Institute of Medicineboth of which documented extensive racial and ethnic disparities in our health care systemthe complex of culture, race, and ethnicity was becoming a major challenge in both research and practice within the field of psychology.
To meet that challenge, Division 45 acquired its own journal devoted to ethnic minority issues in psychology (Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology). At the same time, a series of handbooks on the topic were published, including Bernal, Trimble, Burlew, and Leongs
