What are the key issues in citizenship education today?

Debates in Citizenship Education encourages student and practising teachers to engage with and reflect on some of the key topics, concepts and debates that they will have to address throughout their career. It places the specialist field of citizenship education in a wider context and aims to enable teachers to reach their own informed judgements and argue their points of view with deeper theoretical knowledge and understanding.

Author biographies

Professor James Arthur, Head of the School of Education, University of Birmingham. He has written widely on the relationship between theory and practice in education, particularly the links between communitarianism, social virtues, citizenship, religion and education. He is Director of citizEd, sits on the executive of the Society for Educational Studies and is editor of the British Journal of Educational Studies.

Dr John Beck, formerly Director of Studies in Education, Homerton College, University of Cambridge. He taught mainly in the areas of Sociology of Education and Professional Studies on undergraduate and Masters courses, as well as supervising and examining doctoral students. His main research interests include: citizenship and citizenship education; social theory and social policy within the sociology of education; and work on the continuing relevance of the work of Basil Bernstein.

Dr Kathy Bickmore, Associate Professor, OISE, University of Toronto. She teaches Social Foundations of Education, Geography/Social Studies Curriculum and the Politics/Practices of Democratic Citizenship and Conflict Resolution Education. Her research focuses on field development on the politics and practice of conflict resolution, and education for equity/democracy in public school contexts.

Dr Max Biddulph, Lecturer, University of Nottingham. He is a member of the Centre for Research in Schools and Communities. He has a particular interest in the field of sex and relationships education and a strong interest in activism and LGBT politics and in sexuality issues in the workplace.

Dr Hilary Cremin, Senior Lecturer, University of Cambridge. She researches and teaches in the areas of citizenship education and conflict resolution in schools and communities in the Faculty of Education. She chairs the Centre for Youth and Democracy, and is an editor of the British Educational Research Journal. She has worked in the public, private and voluntary sector as a school teacher, educational consultant, project coordinator and academic, and has research interests in the USA, New Zealand and Japan.

Professor Ian Davies, Professor in Education, University of York. He is the editor of the citizED and CiCea journal
