This book deals with the historical relationship between international trade liberalisation - one of the backbones of globalisation - and the development of social welfare. In Europe the issue has regularly been at the centre of the political debate for at least two centuries, and still nowadays it continues to inspire decisions of the highest order, as in the recent case of Brexit. Analysing a number of particularly meaningful episodes and moments, the eight chapters of this edited volume provide an overview of how the liberalisation/welfare nexus has been addressed in Europe since the end of the 19th century. Describing the oscillations from phases in which state, non-state and transnational actors saw the two elements as widely conflicting, to others in which more harmonious visions prevailed, the book uncovers the political complexity of the issue and contributes to clarifying its connections with the current economic situation, political balances and general social conditions.

Free trade and social welfare in Europe: Explorations in the long 20th century emerged from our attempt to blend our respective fields of research trade policy and social policy to ponder the relationship between international trade and social welfare, both critically and historically. We had noticed that with few exceptions historians have not dedicated attention to this relationship, despite its consequences.
This attempt provided the original spark for the organisation of an international conference on the nexus between the two dimensions. The conference Free Trade and Social Charges in 20th century Europe: a historical reassessment took place in November 2015 at the Department of Political Science, Law and International Studies of the University of Padova. Here the contributors to the volume, together with David Celetti, Henric Hggqvist, Michael Huberman, Mathieu Segres, Kristian Steinnes, Pierre Tilly and Nicolas Verschueren, presented their preliminary results and tried to place their findings in a long-term perspective. We benefited richly from our discussions with Elena Calandri, Michel-Pierre Chlini, Francesco Petrini, Federico Romero, Gianfranco Tusset and Antonio Varsori, who also attended the conference and were generous with their time and insightful with their comments. Subsequently, Donald Sassoon and Francine McKenzie joined the group and brought their wide-ranging knowledge of the field.
