Israel at the Polls 2003
Israel's 2003 election took place against the backdrop of a deteriorating security situation; Palestinian violence dominated the agenda, and the impending US war in Iraq loomed over the region. Moreover the Israeli people had become severely disillusioned with the Oslo Peace Process and any hope of it bringing resolution to the Israeli-Palestine conflict.
Election day, which brought about a decisive victory for the Likud Party and Ariel Sharon, took place amidst fierce accusations of corruption and the virtual collapse of the Israeli left. The election also featured the rise of the anti-clerical Shinui party which resulted in the exclusion of the ultra-orthodox parties from the new coalition.
Israel at the Polls 2003 brings together key Israeli Political Scientists to explore the main actors and untangle the complex processes which shaped the election and its outcome.
This is a special issue of the journal Israel Affairs.
