Sexuality & Culture is dedicated to the critical analysis and discussion of sociocultural and ethical issues relating to sexual behavior and sexual relationships. The annual publication will address fundamental and diverse discourses which function to frame sexuality in contemporary society. The focal concerns of Sexuality & Culture will not be clinical or therapeutic. The primary focus of Sexuality & Culture will be on sexual social control issues, such as issues relating to freedom of sexual expression, freedom of sexual association, privacy, visibility, consent, sex work and workers, and sexual harassment (which is the focus of our premiere issue).
Sexuality & Culture is interdisciplinary, embracing the social and behavioral sciences, the humanities, and the law. Scholars from these disciplines will address issues in a manner that facilitates interdisciplinary communication. This publication will not be limited by disciplinary boundaries.
The editor is committed to creating a publication that does not limit its purview in any way by contemporary sexual politics. In part, this annual was created as a result of the rise of a sexual correctness ideology in academia, which has functioned to censor sexual expression for fear of giving offense, for fear of causing discomfort to those who supposedly were demanding the right to be comfortable. This annual does not recognize any right of its readers to be comfortable, or the right not to be offended. Scholarship that is of a creative nature functions to challenge dominant ideologies and paradigms. We hope to challenge.
Although Sexuality & Culture will be primarily academic and scholarly, contributions will not be limited to traditional academic scholarly pieces. We will include nonacademic pieces such as personal essays, commentaries, and autobiographical accounts. Critiques and reviews of art, performance art and artists, mainstream films, and adult videos will be included. No area will be considered off-limits. Writings relating to contemporary public personages impacting on sexual culturesuch as Annie Sprinkle, Andrea Dworkin, or Madonnaare welcomed. The 1998 volume will be thematic, focusing on sex work and sex workers. This theme will include prostitution, pornography, and all other venues relating to the commercialization of sexuality. Essays should be submitted to the managing editor. In the 1998 volume, we will also consider personal commentaries and essays related to the theme of the 1997 issue.
Communications will not be limited to that of author to reader. In addition to having a letters section, we have a web page to which readers can post their commentaries. Readers wishing to post commentaries should e-mail them to me directly at case@csulb.edu. The annuals web page address is http://www.csulb.edu/~asc/journal.html. Readers can access this web page to obtain up-to-date information. Contributors will also be encouraged to make their e-mail addresses available so that readers can directly communicate with them.
