Two striking illustrations of the reality that social work deals with problematic aspects of peoples lives is the fact that social workers engage with the labels used to refer to people and sometimes to discriminate against them and exclude them from society.
What to call the people with whom we work?
There is no single term used throughout the UK, let alone throughout other western countries, for the person with whom social workers work. In settings where therapy or counselling is the main focus, the term client tends to be used and sometimes social workers adopt this word. In healthcare settings, the term patient may be used and adopted by social workers, for instance, in hospitals. In adult social care, service user and carer are used widely, or person who uses services. Sometimes also, words such as customer or consumer are used in local government and public services. In advocacy work, terms such as service adviser, consultant and expert through experience are also used. Each of these words has supporters and critics. Throughout this book, the terms service user and client are used most often, depending on whether the focus of practice lies closer to social care or therapeutic work.
