Graham Allan is Professor of Social Relations at Keele University. His research mainly focuses on aspects of informal social relationships. He is particularly interested in the sociology of friendship, family and domestic life, kinship, and community and has written widely on these subjects. His current research includes projects on stepfamily kinship and on marital affairs.
Vicky Cattell has researched and published on deprived and regenerating neighbourhoods, social networks, social capital and health inequalities, and taught sociology, social policy and politics. She is currently working at Queen Mary, University of London. Previously she has worked at the House of Commons, Goldsmiths College, University of London, Middlesex University, and University College London.
Graham Crow is Reader in Sociology at the University of Southampton, where he has worked since 1983. He is the author or co-author of four books and editor or co-editor of four more, on various subjects relating to families, households, communities and social theory. He has also co-edited the electronic journal Sociological Research Online. He is currently writing a book on modes of sociological argument, and working on a project exploring the issue of informed consent in the research process.
Pearl Dykstra is a Research Professor at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute at the University of Utrecht in Holland. Her research is principally concerned with social gerontology, especially in the areas of ageing, intergenerational bonds, childlessness and the life course. She has published widely on these topics.
Melanie Gironda is Lecturer of Social Welfare at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where she teaches courses on social gerontology and research on ageing. She received both her PhD and MSW from UCLA. She serves as Deputy Program Director of the Hartford Doctoral Fellows Program in Geriatric Social Work. Dr Girondas research examines loneliness in various populations of the elderly, with a special focus on the nature of social support networks of older adults without children.
James Lubben is Professor of Social Welfare and Urban Planning at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Both his DSW and MPH are from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr Lubben serves as National Director of the Hartford Doctoral Fellows Program in Geriatric Social Work and as a regular consultant to the World Health Organization-Kobe Centre on health and welfare systems development for aging societies. Dr Lubbens research examines social behavioral determinants of vitality in old age, with a particular focus on the roles of social support networks.
David Morgan is Emeritus Professor at the University of Manchester and is a Visiting Professor of Sociology at Keele University. He has a part-time Professor 2 appointment at NTNU, Trondheim. He has written widely on aspects of family sociology, close relationships and masculinities.
Virginia Morrow is Research Lecturer, Department of Health and Social Care, Brunel University. Children and young people have been the primary focus of her research activities since 1988. Her most recent research explored the relationship between social capital and health in relation to children and young people, published as Networks and Neighbourhoods: Childrens and young peoples perspectives, Health Development Agency, London, 2001.
Victoria Nash is Policy and Research Officer at the Oxford Internet Institute and is also a Lecturer in Politics for Trinity College, Oxford. She was previously a Research Fellow at ippr, leading a programme of research for the Communities Initiative. Her recent publications include Reclaiming Community (ippr, 2002) and Making Sense of Community (ippr, 2003).
Ray Pahl is a Research Professor at the Institute of Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex and Professor Emeritus, University of Kent at Canterbury. He is the author (with J.M. Pahl) of Managers and their Wives (1970) in which he explored patterns of friendship in the middle class. His more recent publications include Divisions of Labour (1984), After Success (1995) and On Friendship (2000). He is currently completing a book with Liz Spencer on their research programme on Friendship and Personal Communities.
Chris Phillipson is Professor of Applied Social Studies and Social Gerontology at Keele University where he is also Dean of Postgraduate Affairs. His most recent books are
