Dr. John J. Sbrega, a Professor of History at the Community College of Rhode Island, has written a unique reference work about the struggle that the United States waged against a defiant enemy over four decades ago. His THE WAR AGAINST JAPAN, 19411945: AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY is a remarkable achievement. Professor Sbrega has amassed material from a wide array of sources in order to provide the researcher with the best literature about this protracted fight by our nation against a powerful foe. Judging by the burgeoning output of films and publications about this era, interest about the war in the Pacific remains high.
The author should be commended not only for the quantity of material that he lists--over 5,200 entries--but also for the fact that he cites books, articles, documents, novels, etc., published on the subject up to December 1987. The organization of the volume is very useful. Dr. Sbrega presents his subject matter in six broad categories. His coverage of reference works, diplomatic political aspects of the war, economic-legal features, military-naval-air power operations, religious discussions related to the struggle, and the social-cultural characteristics of the war related to the fighting in the Pacific all help to provide a convenient method of selecting the precise topics for which readers need dependable references.
Due to the fact that Professor Sbrega studied innumerable declassified documents, one can obtain a unique perspective of the war from the level of our policymakers of the era. Because the plight of Japanese-Americans who were confined in military encampments is still a controversial matter that sears the conscience, Sbrega cites ample material on this sensitive issue. There is also ample material here--to mention but a few of the subjects--on the efforts of the Allies for the United States in the Pacific, the judicial trials of Japanese commanders in postwar years for war crimes, coverage of the lesser-known but fascinating campaigns in Southeast Asia, and ample citations about the incredible adventures and hardships of those fighting men who participated in amphibious warfare.
This study is the tenth volume of annotated bibliographies in the series Wars of the United States. It is an essential reference tool written by a respected scholar who is the author of many articles about World War II. Dr. Sbrega merits praise not only for the methodology of his organization and for his thoughtful coverage of diverse topics but he especially deserves to be commended for his writing ability. The writer possesses the talent of being able to compress the essence of a book or article into a few terse, well-chosen sentences. This book may be the definitive reference work about our countrys struggle against the Japanese in World War II.
Richard L. Blanco
General Editor
This annotated bibliography offers over 5,200 entries drawn from books, journals, magazines, and official documents related to the participation of the United States in the war against Japan, 19411945. The cut-off date for these selectionsall published in Englishis December 31, 1987.
First a few words about what is not in this bibliography. Regularly published (e.g., weekly) news magazines, surveys, bulletins, reprinted speeches, and United Nations reviews have been excluded as have wartime works offering prescriptions on how to prevent World War III. In addition, under the guidance of the general editor of this bibliographic series on the wars of the United States, I eliminated references to the conflicting interpretations of various historiographical schools. (See Richard L. Blanco, THE WAR OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, New York: Garland Publishing, 1984, pp. xiii-xiv.) Thus, readers will find few direct references to historiographical debates such as the origins of the Cold War, who lost China, and atomic diplomacy. Nor have I exhausted the sources available on related topics (e.g., the Occupation of Japan, Asian histories, and biographies of prominent persons).
This book, however, does incorporate some unusual features. For instance, I have included official military reports that have been declassified and published in order to provide authoritative perspectives on the progress of the war. Similarly, material on the plight of the Japanese minority population in the United States (as well as the Japanese populations in Hawaii, Canada, and Peru) has been added not only as an important dimension of the war against Japan but also because of continuing public interest in the topic. As I write this introduction, for example, the question of compensation by the government to Japanese-American evacuees ($20,000 to each one?) remains under public discussion, and the 1988 presidential campaign has focused some attention on the American Civil Liberties Union. Another unique feature of this bibliographic guide is its citations on the scientific development of the atomic bomb and the postwar medical reports on the effects of the two atomic bombings. These two categories complement the entries on the decision to use the atomic bomb and the actual bombing missions against Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Readers are also invited to review the relatively new sources presented here on special weapons (including Japanese innovations) and biological/chemical warfare.
