CONTENTS
Dr. James G. Lydon, Professor of History at Duquesne University, has compiled a unique bibliographical reference work, STRUGGLE FOR EMPIRE: A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR, 17561763. Chronologically, the extension of Europes Seven Years War to North America is not within the traditional framework of United States military history. However, this contest between France and Great Britain for imperial control of a continent had such sweeping ramifications on events leading to the War of the American Revolution that the subject is inherently, and necessarily, part of the series, The Wars of the United States.
As Professor Lydon notes in his thoughtful introduction, the French and Indian War era comprises a logical point to commence an understanding of Americas major military struggles. The war required the white inhabitants of the thirteen original colonies and settlers on the western frontiers to cooperate with each other and with the British army in order to ward off devastating attacks by a seemingly merciless enemy. To achieve victory, these colonists of diverse religious, nationality, and geographic origins, collaborated to a degree heretofore deemed unimaginable. The author stresses the consequences for the forthcoming decades our future generals learned strategy, tactics and logistics; militiamen served in numerous naval and military expeditions and thereby gained campaign experience; and visionary American statesmen perceived the necessity for closer political union. Furthermore, debates in colonial assemblies about taxation, quartering of troops, defining Indian policy, and limiting executive powers had significant ramifications as the Americans groped by 1776 to a sense of national identity and a revolutionary consciousness about the rights of free men.
