The collection of papers in this volume were first presented at a workshop entitled Pots, Palaces and Politics An International Workshop on the Evolution and Sociopolitical Significance of Plain Ware Traditions in the 2nd Millennium BC Near East and East Mediterranean, which was held at the AHRC Centre for the Evolution of Cultural Diversity at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London on 5 June 2009. This workshop was made possible by the generous financial support of the AHRC Centre for the Evolution of Cultural Diversity, the Complex and Literate Societies and Cultural Dynamics Research Group at the Institute of Archaeology, and the Council for British Research in the Levant. I would like to thank Manu Davies for her help with the practical organisation of the workshop and James Steele, Andy Bevan and David Wengrow, who lent their time and support before and during the course of the workshop. I am grateful to the two reviewers for their helpful comments, in particular, Clive Owen, who revealed his identity and kindly lent a helping statistical hand. I am also grateful to Michael Given for his comments.
