Why Rethinking Japan?
We felt it was the right moment to survey the situation in Japanese studies from as wide a perspective as possible.
Increasingly, a new mood, a new language could be identified in the work of Japanese and Western researchers. Diverse and significant new openings could be perceived emerging from their enquiries. Moreover, certain theories which for years had been accepted as sound and irrefutable had recently been brought back into the debating arena. One need only think of the reevaluation of the established views on the Tokugawa period. A new generation of scholars in the prime of their scientific maturity were now in the spotlight.
The idea of the Symposium therefore, was to put the American and Japanese worlds of study, which have been so active in these last decades, into direct contact with the more innovative tendencies in Europe, thus providing an opportunity to meet and reflect on how best to conduct our research and agree on both the objectives and the way ahead in our field. In other words, to redefine the meaning of Japanese studies today.
