Democratic Rural Organizations: Thresholds for Evolution in Africa and Asia: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Democratic Rural Organizations: Thresholds for Evolution in Africa and Asia" wrote himself). Democratic rural organizations can play an important role in helping their members, who are frequently poor farmers living in the margins of the economy, to escape their disadvantaged starting point and to gain access to financial services, political influence and profitable markets for their product. Democratic Rural Organizations: Thresholds for Evolution in Africa and Asia traces the evolution of democratic rural organizations from small groups to larger, NGO financed, multi-tier democratic rural organizations in recent years.

Rural citizens have historically formed democratic organizations by their own initiative, to enhance economic and social wellbeing, but in recent years rural mobilization processes are frequently initiated and supported by national Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), who are financed and guided by international NGOs, a process which has had mixed results. Using rich empirical material from Uganda, India, Bangladesh and Cambodia, Democratic Rural Organizations: Thresholds for Evolution in Africa and Asia identifies eight thresholds which represent practical stages in the development pathway of democratic rural organizations and influence success or failure.

Both development practitioners and researchers of development and rural policy will find this book a useful guide to the deployment of democratic organization as a strategy for economic and political empowerment.

The fieldwork for the study was carried out in 2014 by a team of researchers from India, Uganda and Denmark as a joint effort. The Asian team was headed by Professor Janki Andharia, the Ugandan team was headed by Dr Godfrey Suubi, while the study was coordinated from Denmark by Dr Esbern Friis-Hansen. In alphabetical order the study team members associated with field work include: Amrita Saikia, Charles Aben, Edison Kamagara, Isaac Nakendo, Jonas Gillett and Udeet Methala. Interns who provided research support include: Tania Mathew and Shristee Sethi.
The study was carried out in collaboration with, and supported by, two Danish CSOs, Caritas and Danmission and 13 national CSO partners in Uganda, India, Bangladesh and Cambodia: TSSS, NERM. SUPOTH, CCFC, PARCE, PNKS, NUCAFE, CARE, CIDI, CAPCA, NAADS, UNFFE and EADEN. Fieldwork was carried out in 38 first-tier and 27 second-tier Democratic Rural Organizations.
During the process of writing the book its eight thresholds were reviewed and reflected on by a group of seven Danish CSOs engaged with the idea of federation of democratic rural organizations with support from Global Focus: Caritas Danmark, Danmission, Mission Council Development Department, Danish Ugandan Friendship Association, Action Child Aid, Danish Forestry Extension and Organic Denmark and Southern partners: Caritas India, Evangelical Church of Tanzania in Kagera Region, WMF, SUPOTH, Itigi Local Church, Sanjaranda Bible College, North Ugandan Cooperative PHCS, RECODA and Farmers Family Learning Groups.
The authors are deeply indebted to numerous people from these organizations who volunteered to share their experiences and knowledge. The insights gained by the research team through the discussions with all the members of rural communities in the four countries have been invaluable. The researchers are humbled by such selfless sharing of experiences, without which this study would not have been possible. Finally thanks to Allan Lind Jorgensen for the graphic design and Robert Parkin for proofreading the manuscript.
