Education, Gender and Development: A Capabilities Perspective: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Education, Gender and Development: A Capabilities Perspective" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

This compelling book takes a novel approach to the complexities of girls and womens education in the global South. To unravel the critical issues and processes behind educational advancement and to identify the factors that support the construction of educational well-being and agency from gender perspective, the book narrates the stories of women who have successfully built their educational careers to higher education. The book creatively applies the human development and capabilities approach to analyze and assess educational advancement and development.

Mari-Anne Okkolin offers a fresh voice to the field of education, gender and development. The book draws on rich, in-depth evidence from Tanzanian women who have reached higher education, placing them amongst the very small percentage of women in the Tanzanian and sub-Saharan contexts. The book explores the womens school experiences, everyday life practices and familial arrangements, and the values, expectations and assumptions associated with education and the schooling of girls and women.

Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of the book, it will be of great interest to multiple academic audiences: post-graduates, researchers and academics. It is of particular relevance for all those interested in education, sociology, development studies, gender/womens studies, and qualitative research methodology. The book will appeal especially to scholars working with the capabilities approach. It will also be of value beyond academia, for education practitioners in planning and implementing education and equality policies internationally.

When I obtained my PhD in 2013, I thought that the project on which this book draws was then completed, as projects are by definition. However, my dissertation developed further into this book, which meant some more time spent with the study. My first encounters with case Tanzania took place in 2002 and ever since we have spent occasional, concentrated and highly intensive time together. Our children were born at the time of this process; hence, for them moms Tanzania things have always been there. Evidently, this has been a long project and process, and my gratitude is due to many people.
First of all, without the ten special, courageous, confident and open Tanzanian women who shared their lives with me, this book would have not existed. I sincerely hope that I have done justice to your stories and achievements. Now, having a few years retrospective perspective on my doctoral studies, Ive come to value even more the wisdom and patience of my Professor Jyrki Jyrkm and Tapio Aittola. Ive also come to appreciate even more the passion and enthusiasm of Dr Elina Lehtomki, supervisor, colleague and friend, for global education and development issues. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to collaborate with some of the leading experts in this area of research, and I want to thank Professors Rauni Rsnen, Elaine Unterhalter and Melanie Walker. I wish to give my special recognition to Elaine and Melanie (the founder and leader of the Centre for Research on Higher Education and Development (CRHED) at the University of the Free State, South Africa) for their valuable input and encouraging comments about my work and scholarly thinking. Besides, this book would not exist without Melanies suggestion and support. I have had an amazing two years as a post-doctoral fellow at the CRHED and I have so much enjoyed and benefitted from our discussions and debates. As observed by a CRHED colleague in her book, the intellectual environment at the CRHED is just amazing. I couldnt agree more and I want to thank you all for creating and being part of it.
At different phases of the research process I have been supported by so many institutions and people: the study has been funded by the Academy of Finland, the Nordic Africa Institute, the Emil Aaltonen Foundation, and the Department of Education at the University of Jyvskyl; Nawa and Peter, thank you for your time and work; many thanks to my brilliant colleagues and friends at the Department of Education and Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy; and my very special thanks to our Tanzanian partners, especially the School of Education at the University of Dar es Salaam, and Professor Eustella P. Bhalalusesa. And Magreth and Hanna, it has been my absolute pleasure to have this joint (ad)venture with you!
