GLOBAL MIGRATION
THE BASICS
Migration is a politically sensitive topic and an important aspect of contentious debates about social and cultural diversity, economic stability, terrorism, globalization, and nationalism. Global Migration: The Basics provides an accessible and balanced introduction to this important area of study, providing a detailed examination of current scholarship, demographic patterns, and public policy debates to discuss:
the history and geography of global migration
the role of migrants in society
the impact of migrants on the economy and the political system
the policy challenges that need to be addressed in a rapidly changing world.
With a series of engaging case studies and suggestions for further reading, Global Migration: The Basics exposes readers to the underlying causes and consequences of migration. This book is an essential read for any students wishing to look beyond the rhetoric and consider the facts about migration.

As we finished writing this book, the City of Boston was still recovering from the bombings at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. The two primary suspects in the bombing were identified as brothers who migrated to the United States as refugees in 2002. Two days after the bombing, the two suspects allegedly carjacked a vehicle. The owner of the vehicle was held hostage, but he later escaped when the suspects stopped at a gas station. The hostage was Danny, a Chinese migrant living in the Boston metropolitan area. After his escape from the bombing suspects, he ran to a gas station and asked a clerk, an immigrant from Egypt, to call the police. Migrants, like all people, can be good or evil, brave or cowardly, can demonstrate true citizenship or harbor hatred. In most cases, like most people, they live regular lives. Yet in a few cases, socio-political tensions surrounding migration can lead to destructive results.
