Ethnicity and Inequality in China This is a theoretically informed and - photo 1
Ethnicity and Inequality in China
This is a theoretically informed and empirically grounded research into a wide range of issues on ethnicity and inequality in China. The contributors, who are established scholars and emerging young research stars in the field, turn a reflective and critical eye on changes and challenges in ethnic policies and practices in China. A gift to teachers, researchers, policy analysts, and students interested in ethnicity in China.
Professor Xiaowei Zang, City University of Hong Kong
This book analyses the behaviour of ethnic minority groups in China using the first comprehensive national dataset dedicated to capturing the socio-economic profile of ethnic minorities: the China Household Ethnicity Survey (CHES).
Managing ethnic diversity in China has become an increasingly important subject, especially against the backdrop of the nations rampant economic growth and changing institutional behaviour. The book has an analytical interest in looking at the benefactors of Chinas growth from an ethnic group dimension, and notably, how the economic life of the 55 ethnic minority groups compares to the Han majority. Its one of the first publications to capture the heterogeneity of ethnic minority groups socio-economic experience, through intersectional analysis and multi-disciplinary approaches. Contributing factors in explaining ethnic minorities experiences in the urban labour market are also considered: from how linguistic capital and migration patterns vary for ethnic minorities, to the effects of pro-rural policies. Underpinning these are questions about the extent to which happiness and discrimination impact the economic life of ethnic minorities.
Ethnicity and Inequality in China will prove an invaluable resource for students and scholars of economics, sociology and contemporary Chinese Studies more broadly.

The modern Chinese state has traditionally affected every major aspect of the domestic society. With the growing liberalization of the economy, coupled with an increasing complexity of social issues, there is a belief that the state is retreating from an array of social problems from health to the environment. Yet, as we survey Chinas social and political landscape today, we see not only is the central state playing an active role in managing social problems, but state actors at the local level are emerging in partnerships with relatively new actors such as social organizations and private enterprises.
The Routledge Research on the Politics and Sociology of China series is interested in examining the sociology and politics of this new China. The series will engage with contemporary research that explores the intricacies of institutional interactions, and analysis of micro-level actors such as migrant workers, ethnic minorities, and women, who are shaping Chinas future. The book series seeks to promote a discourse and analysis that views state and society as contested spaces for power, authority, and legitimacy. As a guiding principle, the series is notably interested in books that use China as a laboratory for confirming, modifying, or rejecting existing mainstream theories in sociology and politics.

Guide
The history of this book started with an international workshop that looked at statistical reporting and research on well-being and poverty for ethnic minorities in China. The workshop was hosted by the Institute for Ethnology and Social Anthropology at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, October 13 and 14, 2011. Approximately 30 Chinese and international scholars, some of them contributors to this book, presented ongoing or recent research on ethnic differences in economic well-being in China and other nations. This workshop also became the starting point for designing and carrying out the China Household Ethnic Survey (CHES). This survey is the largest effort, to date, to collect household data with the primary aim of mapping and analyzing ethnic differences in economic well-being in the P.R. China. In order to facilitate the analytical work using the data, additional workshops in connection to conferences hosted by the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) took place November 20, 2012 and November 23, 2013.
