This volume originated in a workshop organized by the Network Migration in Europe (http://www.network-migration.org). The Network is a framework for the co-operation of scholars, practitioners and others interested in exchanging and distributing knowledge about the importance of migration in Europes history and present. It is working toward the acknowledgement of the plural past and present of European societies, as well as their multiple links.
The publication of this book and the preceding conference was made possible by a generous grant from the Gemeinntzige Hertie-Stiftung. We would also like to express our sincere thanks to the Bundeszentrale fr politische Bildung and the Forschergruppe Gesellschaftsvergleich at Humboldt University Berlin (funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) for providing additional financial support for the original conference from which the contributions to this book were drawn. Without their help this international endeavour would not have been possible. We also thank James Ingram and Susanne Jordan for assisting in copy-editing as well as Dr. Ihor Stebelsky for permission to reprint the map on page 216.
