Preface
This project has been in the making for nearly a decade. In a previous book, Power and Stability in the Middle East, I showed the lack of any lasting stability in this war-torn region of the world. The present book was conceived as a sequel to this work to highlight the impact of imperialism, war, and political turmoil in the Middle East throughout the course of the twentieth centuryfrom the devastation of the First World War through the many crises and conflicts that have led to cycles of war, uprisings, coups, revolts, and revolutions.
This book has benefited from several visits to the Middle East over the past number of years, including Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Cyprus, Greece, Armenia, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, Israel, and the West Bank. My latest visits to the regionGreece and Armenia in 1995, Cyprus and Lebanon in 1996, Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, and the West Bank in 1997, Lebanon in 1998, and Greece in 1999have allowed me the opportunity to deliver a series of lectures and meet with colleagues at several universities, including the American University of Beirut, the Lebanese American University, the Haigazian University College, the American University in Cairo, the University of Cyprus, the American University of Armenia, the American College of Thessaloniki, and the Center for Asia Minor Studies. Colleagues and friends at these and other universities and research centers throughout the Middle East have provided much valuable information, which I have incorporated into this book.
