The market values of the global mining and the energy sectors in 2015 were estimated to be US$1 trillion and US$1.3 trillion, respectively. As the mining and energy sectors are pivotal to many world economies, the sustainability issues facing these sectors assume greater significance. Chinas economic rebalancing, fluctuating commodity prices that are taking longer to recover than anticipated, rising energy costs, and the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of mining and processing of the mined product have led the mineral sector to focus on and invest in innovative and bold sustainable practices. The high dependency of the mining sector on energy has paved the way for the development of technologies promoting renewable energy resources easing the reliance on nonrenewable resources as well as identifying energy efficiency opportunities and reducing the carbon footprint. Safety, security, and health all have huge impacts on mining productivity. A need for a more uniform and effective global regulatory regime for the mineral and energy sectors is still felt following the recent collapse of an iron ore tailings dam in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais and Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011.

This peer-reviewed book examines the worldwide sustainability practices in the mineral and energy sectors. The contributors are eminent representatives of academia, industry, and government bodies from Australia, Canada, India, Greece, Korea, Papua New Guinea, South Africa, Spain, Macedonia, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The book addresses six major themes:

Section I: Mining and Mineral Processing

Section II: Metallurgy/Recycling

Section III: Environment

Section IV: Energy

Section V: Socio-Economic, Regulatory

Section VI: Sustainable Materials, Fleets

The need for an integrated transdisciplinary approach with innovative interdisciplinary research to address the sustainability challenges facing the minerals and the energy sectors is emphasised throughout this book. This book deliberates on lifting the mining productivity and optimising energy efficiency across the mining and mill-to-melt operations and downstream in terms of innovation, step-change technologies. The need for integrated waste management practices including zero waste concepts and cost-effective environmentally friendly technologies to recover valuable resources from wastes are emphasised. Economic, environmental, and social parameter analyses are used to identify the areas for improvement in iron and steel production, as well as aluminium, lead, zinc, copper, and gold.
