America, like all nations, has endured its share of megacrises. Weve had military conflicts that claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands; economic disasters, like the Great Depression, that left millions destitute; disease pandemics, including the Spanish flu, which killed 675,000 Americans; catastrophic earthquakes and other natural disasters; and, of course, the 9/11 terror attacks.
