I am greatly indebted to my family and friends for their continuous support to complete this novel. I use this opportunity to show my gratitude to the most amazing people in my life. Firstly, my mom and dad, the most supportive parents ever, believing and encouraging me in all my endeavors. Kalpana sister, the one who first identified and motivated the writer in me during my school days. Lavanya, my friend, who was the first reader of this novel and most of my stories. Other than me, two of my best friends who have spent a lot of time for this book. Srinath Sathyanarayanan, giving regular feedback to improve it in a better way and Rohit Surendran, who is like my brother, without his help, I am sure the story would not have come as I expected.
Special Thanks to my best buddies Raj Kumar, Karthi SR, Bala Balu, Ragunath, Selva, and Murali who were with me always in all my good and bad days. I am much obliged to Mickey Douglas and Unita Vasishta who helped to improve the book with stylized words and corrections. Both of them have supported me without any hesitation whenever I sought their help. I would also like to thank my friends Srivani, Deepa Warrier, Sangeetha, Ranjith Raj, Ganesh Ayyapureddy and Dhiyaneshwaran who supported in my writing career.
Final and big thanks to everyone who would be reading this book. Kindly share your thoughts and feedback about the book. Please do rate my work.
Prologue
My face contorted with fear. I could not think clearly. I locked my room from within. I heard the sound of someone trying to open the door. I stood near the door and heard noises from the other side. I felt frightened because of the words. The thundering sound of pushing the door made my heart race terribly. I perceived that my death is very much near to me. The past thoughts flashed through my mind. I am going far away from my family and my beloved, with their precious memories. I remember the golden moments in my life, right from my childhood. Thinking about the days of our courtship, make me cry. The dream of living a happy life with you is never going to happen. I dont know how you would get over the unbearable pain of separation. Please save me God, for his sake. I have only one option before myself. I decided.
Finally, the door padlock broke from inside.
Who is she? Whom does she love madly? What is going to happen to her?
Let's find out in the story. The story begins from one of the most beautiful places in Tamil Nadu.
CONTENTS
Spa of South India
C ourtallam or Kutralam is a town which sits at 520 feet above sea level on the Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu. Kutralam is famous for its spectacular climate, cascading waterfalls, and the medicinal properties of its river waters flowing through herbal forests. The numerous cascading waterfalls along with ubiquitous health resorts in the area have earned it the title the Spa of South India.
The force of the water on the bodies of bathers frees them from all tensions and worries, and completely relaxes them. One needs to stay at least a couple of days to fully enjoy the natural beauty of this place. Its as if God had created a heaven here on earth for people to enjoy.
The story begins in a village near Kutralam called Puliyangudi. Vinay, Sanjay and Raja reached Puliyangudi village in their silver colored Tavera from Chennai to attend a marriage. They could not move further and had to stop because a crowd of people were walking in front of them in a ceremonial manner. They decided to walk along with the crowd.
In the center of the crowd stood a girl, stunning in her new wedding sari with a radiant smile lit on her face. People holding handmade lights surrounded her on all corners and walked along with her. The bride was in the center with her friends and they seemed to be enjoying the ceremony.
Sanjay asked Vinay, Do you have any idea what this is all about?
Vinay replied saying, This village has few formalities to conduct before the wedding. The bride had to reach the engagement hall by foot. And this was done in order to introduce the bride to the people of the village of the bridegroom. But the groom can come in any vehicle.
Sanjay said, Uneducated fellows with old customs!
Vinay said, If someone hears what you said, we will surely be in trouble.
But Sanjay smirked and said, We are speaking English, they will not understand what we are saying.
An old man came up to Sanjay. He was wearing a dusty white shirt and a dhoti, his face lined with wrinkles.
Very politely the old man said to Sanjay, You may think that only people from the city can speak English, but I can speak more fluently than you. Dont think that villagers are illiterate fellows. We are more educated and have more common sense than you. We are well educated, but we also value our traditions. Not everyone will advise you like me, saying this he took out a sharp knife from his dhoti and showed Sanjay.
The knife looked different. Nothing like anything they had ever seen. Its sheath was like a golden snake and shone brightly even in the moonlight. The weapon seemed older than Sanjay and he was scared.
Vinay apologized to the old man on behalf of Sanjay and left. Sanjay nodded his head silently while his friends had a good laugh. They moved closer to the crowd and glanced over at the girls who were walking with the bride. The bride and her friends looked very beautiful. As they admired the girls, they felt as if the angels had come down from the heavens to this village. They felt happy seeing these angels.
Raja said, I was worried to come to this bald guys wedding, but now I feel happy. The only unlucky one is the bride marrying our bald guy.
And they had a good laugh. Suddenly a girl ran into the crowd and reached the bride. She was very beautiful. She looked angelic. She spoke with the bride in a hushed manner and seemed to be her close friend. The boys became dumbstruck with her presence. Whenever she spoke, the smile on her lips and her mesmerizing eyes looked gorgeous.
Sanjay said, She looks beautiful.
Raja added, She is not only beautiful, she is an angel.
And Vinay continued, For me, she looks like the princess of all angels.
Raja said, One good thing, Ram is not here now. If he were here, we would have had to forget her.
Vinay said, Not only her, we would have had to forget all the angels. He has the ability to flirt and date with any girl. But lets be careful, he may reach here at any time.
Suddenly a hand fell on Vinays shoulder and sure enough, Ram was standing there. But he was not aware of their conversation. His friends murmured that he would not have known anything about what they were discussing. By this time the crowd had moved away from them and Ram did not see the girls. Ram and his friends reached the engagement hall that looked magnificent, much more than what they had expected.
The hall was completely full and noisy. Ram and his friends sat opposite the brides friends and Ram was busy attending to the bridegroom Ashok, just like the princess was busy attending the bride.
