Ultimate Resource
The Rewards of Intuition
"One can never consent to creep when one feels animpulse to soar." -- Helen Keller
All good things come from living intuitively. Tofollow that feeling inside of us we call our intuition is reallythe only way to fulfill our highest aspirations and deepest needs, indeed, the intuitive impulse helps us to soar.
We all want to find the path in life that will bringus happiness and love, abundance, good health, and meaning. Unlikeour animal friends, who instinctively and unerringly know how tolive to their fullest, we have many more choices to make, and thusmuch more doubt and confusion.
How do we know our way? Nikos Kazantzakis, author ofZorba the Greek, once wrote, "As I watched the seagulls, I thought,'That's the road to take; find the absolute rhythm and follow itwith absolute trust.'"
What is our absolute rhythm? The intuitive flow thatnaturally moves within us at all times.
Intuition is the life force itself, made consciousto us through a feeling that arises from within. Intuition is ourhuman version of animal instinct. Through our intuition we tap theultimate resource of all--the very source of life. By following theintuitive spirit all that each of us can humanly be and do isdirectly revealed and made manifest.
Intuition is an everyday way for everyone to connectwith the divine. It is not necessary to be religious, meditate, pray, or be "psychic" to be intuitive. Our contact with the lifespirit through intuition is ever-present and immediate. In fact, everyone is intuitive, naturally.
Much of the time, however, we unconsciously followour own intuition. And then sometimes we don't--we let somebodyelse's belief, opinion, or dictate determine our life. The trueintuitive person is consciously aware of the inner feeling andfeels good about following the feeling. The intuitive life is theconsciously felt life.
"There is something within you that knows much morethan you know. " Rochelle Myers,Creativity in Business
We can all probably recall an instance where ourintuition guided us or saved us in some extraordinary or miraculousway. Reading Newsweek magazine, I came across the story of Dana Colwell. As she recounts, "When I got upto put my clothes on one morning, I almost didn't wear a bra. But ahigher power told me to put it on." Shortly thereafter, she was hitin the chest with a nail, but was saved from serious injury by herpadded bra.
My own intuition story goes back to my senior yearof high school. I was selected to participate in a series ofcompetitive panels for achieving the distinction of being the topmath and science student in the San Francisco Bay Area. I washardly the best, but somehow I intuited in advance what questionswere going to be asked. My intuition was in action, and I won that award because I heeded that feelinginside of me.
Although I was mightily impressed by this mysteriouspower, I went on with my ordinary way of living. Many of us haveencountered some great experience of precognition; yet I suspect wemostly view intuition as some uncontrollable, random phenomenon. Why don't we deliberately cultivate our intuitiveness? Is itbecause we believe it's only serendipitous? Is it because we aren'teven aware that intuitions exist within us from moment tomoment?
Because intuition emanates from the very mystery oflife, it is often unrecognized and unobserved. It is evendenigrated and dismissed as something so ineffable that it cannotbe trusted.
I have written this book to explore how intuition ispresent in every moment of our lives and how it exists in many waysother than the occasional hunch. What this investigation has shownme is how much intuition can do for us, and how easily it can beaccessed. I believe our intuition is useful in a practical way, more so now than in any other time in human evolution, such that ithas even become imperative for the survival of our species.
Opening the Big Mind
"Genius, in truth, means little more than thefaculty of perceiving in an unhabitual way. " Robert Olson, The Art ofCreative Thinking (quoting Psychologist and PhilosopherWilliam James)
The key to unlocking the richness of our intuitivewisdom is to engage in extraordinary, perhaps even revolutionaryways of comprehending our lives. Examples in this book of how to dothis range from metaphoric and symbolic picture thinking, strategicstorytelling, creative walking, art, and dreaming, to awarenessmeditation, "metasensory" smelling and tasting, consulting oracles,mind's-eye visualization, humming, fooling around, and mostimportantly, freeing your feelings.
The Authentic Life
Intuitions come from deep within us in such a waythat they can bypass our socialization and our conditioned thoughtsand beliefs. Intuitive feelings represent what is true for each ofus individual beings. Intuitive thinking is authentic living.
True to ourselves, we can author and make the lifethat is absolutely right for us. Following our inner authority, andno one else's, intuition tells us our needs and guides our desires. Then all our decisions and actions come from the very essence ofour own being. We can do no more than this.
"You have got to discover you, what you do, andtrust it." -- Barbara Streisand
Only when we know ourselves and act ourselves, canwe be truly, truly happy. For, as Jan Roberts writes in The Natureof Personal Reality, "You must trust yourself. If you do not, thenyou will forever be looking to others to prove your own merit toyou, and you will never be satisfied."
Through intuition, we live out all that we can be,all we are meant to be. The seed of potential inherent within us atbirth can grow uncompromised into fullness. There can be no greater joy and no greaterpurpose for living.
Genius
Intuition is the source of our own unique andnatural genius . It's u nfortunate thatgenius is equated with only mental intelligence. At the risk ofsounding silly, everyone has genes, and thus genius. The genius ofevery living entity is in the particular way it expresses its ownoriginal being.
