TABLE OF CONTENTS
I gratefully acknowledge the contributions of my editor, Richard Firsten (). He is not only a superlative linguist, teacher, and author, but is as patient and insightful as any editor could be. Beyond that, he is very sensitive to allowing an author his or her own voice, always guiding and never overriding.
I also wish to acknowledge Stephanee Killen of Integrative Ink (integrativeink.com) for a beautiful cover design and interior layout. She has proven to be knowledgeable, professional, and very responsive to my needs in putting this book together. I am grateful for both her kindness and her expertise.
I would especially like to thank my husband, Charles, for his patience and loving support. His encouragement and faith in me have been a blessing.
Eve ryone who knows me well is aware of my penchant for philosophy, spirituality, and quantum physics. Its true; Im fascinated by all things transcendent, esoteric, and holistic. This interest in things beyond rational thought and beyond the bounds of the physical realm has resulted in two previous books that contain both psychological and spiritual thought. To me the two disciplines seem inextricably intertwined.
Emotional Processing is a departure from my first two books in that it is strictly psychological in nature. It is a practical guide to working through your emotions. As such, it is meant to help you work with yourself as an individual who is subject to the limitations of the physical world.
The reality is that your power on this planet is limited (you are not omnipotent), you do not have infinite awareness, understanding, and insight (you are not omniscient), and you are presently located in a specific place and time (you are not omnipresent). Furthermore, your choices are sometimes limited, you are subject to the physical laws of this planet, you have a certain genetic predisposition, and you are dealing with a physical body that is subject to illness and eventually death. You live in a four-dimensional world (height, width, depth, and time). You have to deal with separate individuals in a very complex external environment (your outer world) and with yourself as a multifaceted, complicated human being with a compendium of thoughts, feelings, memories, strivings, and biological needs (your inner world).
Given all this, in Emotional Processing Ive tried to keep things practical, tangible, and doable.
Yet I want all who read this book to know that everyones existence goes beyond the physical realm. While you exist on the physical realm as dense matter, you simultaneously exist on the nonphysical realm as light, movement, and energy. The latter realm is found on the subatomic level. On a subatomic level all is very different. There you have fewer limitations to your power, knowledge, and presence. You do not struggle with a physical body and its constraints. You exist as pure energy. You can move and create at will. Your power, knowledge, and presence are boundless. You do not get sick and die; you are eternal (energy cannot be destroyed; it can only change forms).
Such a realm has been discovered through quantum physics; it is definitely there. This realm and other nonphysical realms can be accessed through altered states of consciousness brought forth by meditation, receptive prayer, inner listening, mindfulness, and immersion in the present moment. There is great value in this, and it is worth your consideration. However, there is a caveat.
The subatomic realm described above is also known as the spiritual realm (spiritual meaning nonphysical, transcendent, unlimited). Many of us relate to the nonphysical realm as spiritual in nature and therefore revere it. Consequently, we largely rely on spiritual practices to solve our problems and function well. This is fine in one regard; however, it should not be the only thing we rely on. The problem is this: While we are ethereal beings on a higher level, we are also physical beings with mass and density. This fact cannot be escaped. We have difficulties here that we do not have on a higher level. Different rules apply. Higher level rules that do apply bring slower results. Some of them are completely misunderstood. In addition, we do not live in a continual state of altered consciousness. Most of us are only aware of being here on the physical plane. Consequently, we have to deal with life as human beings on planet Earth.
I would encourage you to explore all possibilities for a better life, but I would not suggest attempting to substitute spiritual practices for psychological ones. It is true that the two can overlap. You can do both, but you cant effectively substitute the spiritual for the psychological. I say this because in my spiritual pursuits I have known people who could access the higher realms regularly, but their lives were a mess. Along with their spiritual practices, they were doing all kinds of unacceptable things. They were still having affairs. They still couldnt get along with their significant others, function well at work, or understand what made them behave as they did. They still exhibited addictive behaviors, suffered from anxiety, got depressed, and lost their tempers. This is because they never mastered the physical realm.
I remember what it was like to be so familiar with the higher realms after years of spiritual practice, only to still struggle with the mundane problems of life. I had been holding myself to a lofty standard, not realizing that here on Earth I was dealing with a very different kind of situation. Specifically, I was dealing with a very limited realm and with very limited powers as a human being.
