Foreword
This first volume of The Dixie Taoist Handbook is in itself the product of dreaming. The instructions in this book are right out of my own handbook for finding my true path and staying on it.
Yet this book is not about me. It is about the ancient philosophical teachings that have been refined over the centuries. It is about you and how you can find your true path.
Even in this modern age with all of the technology available for a smooth and happy life, we find that we still suffer from the same idiosyncrasies that our ancient ancestors did. Striving, materialism, ego and suffering are as relevant now as they were then. So the wisdom from the ancient times is as relevant.
This book is how to transform your life into one of successful living. Here are step by step instruction for how to create the destiny of your dreams. If you follow these step by step and hold yourself accountable. You will learn and administer self-discipline, self-control and the will-power of the true self.
However this is hard dedicated work. Success awaits you only if you are truly ready and willing to change your ways and let go of the old life of ignorance and suffering. This new path must become a way of life and be sustained. You will spend the rest of your life cultivating the realization of your dreams. Yet the result, this payoff is huge. I wish you success in waking up into truly extraordinary life.

1 FINDING YOUR TRUE PATH
Life is a journey of self discovery. It is the discovery of the true self. What is the true self you ask? The true self is the part of you that has been lost to distraction. There is a part of you that is above the pettiness and self serving ego. This higher aspect of the self is your spiritual center. This aspect of you is eternal and resonates at a higher state of consciousness. To realize the true self, one must only awaken.
In this modern world, influenced by our popular culture, many if not most individuals live lives of distraction. Distraction can be thought of as a state of not being aware. This lower state of consciousness is an almost hypnotic state induced by a constant tuning out of reality. Reality should be found in the current or present moment. The Now. When your mind is caught up with incessant thinking or when your mind is completely captivated by something other than reality, this is a state of distraction. This distracted state is influenced and often controlled by coping and desire. Sometimes it is driven by hope.
Until now you may not realize that you help to create your destiny. Destiny is created moment by moment, in present time. The choices you make in each moment create your life. As you experience life, you move toward a destiny created by those choices and by the law of cause and effect. Where you end up is to a high degree under your control. So why do you make these choices that lead to a less than desirable destiny? It is due to making choices in a distracted state of mind. Your lower consciousness is a weak state of mind that is easily influenced by your ego. The ego is that self serving, narcissistic, sensation seeking and coping part of you that is just never satisfied. When this low brow state of distraction is running things, you are not able to make the best decisions.
The opposite of this is the true self. The true self is the higher state of consciousness that is your spiritual identity. It is the eternal and wise part of you that is the observer. The part of you who perceives all thoughts that come across your mind. As you read this, it may occur to you that this is something you have never experienced before. I believe that you have, but a kind of amnesia brought on by distraction. So the obvious question is, how do you find and become your true self again? Since the ego would never admit to this, this is your true self beginning to awaken. This part of you in this moment is awake, aware and seeking to remember. This is where it begins. This is a journey of awakening and staying awake.
To begin the journey, you must awaken. When you do, your true path is revealed and your true life begins.
Volume One is about how to discover that you have a true self and a true path. It gives you the step by process for awakening and staying awake. Sounds simple, but in reality it is something that you will have to work on over time.
I am going to share my story so that you can see what is possible. Hopefully from my failure at life and the recovery I experienced you will realize how you too can turn your life around. If I can do this, so can you.
My life collapsed about a decade ago. I caused my own self destruction because I was on the wrong path. I used to be the typical type-A personality. I was loud, aggressive and self-serving. My purpose in life was to greedily fulfill desire. Enough was never enough. I was angry and stressed out, constantly striving to find fulfillment in all of the wrong places.
In a three or four year period I lost employment, money, house, cars, and respect from family and peers. Then I lost my health. In late 2005 I began to experience chest pains and fatigue. My prostate was enlarged, my blood pressure was extremely high, as was my cholesterol. I constantly suffered from gout and I was borderline diabetic. My family physician sent me to a Cardiologist where I failed the stress test and was scheduled for an angiogram . On the day of my appointment I had a fight with my boss which did something bad to my heart. I began to experience symptoms of a heart attack, so I reported to the hospital early. They took me in right away where the Cardiologist announced that yes, I had in fact had one heart vein that was completely blocked. The other three were also blocked but not quite as bad. There was a discussion about returning for more stints and possibly by-pass surgery if I did not turn things around. As I lay there on the table looking at the monitor that showing me just how sick I was, I had a moment of truth. I realized and accepted for the first time my mortality. I was very scared and I promised myself that I would do what ever it took to straighten my life out.
