Dedication
I offer my homage to that wonderful teaching of my Guru serving as a boat and crossing the fathomless ocean of doubts and full of such words as express wonderful uncommon ideas.
Spanda Karikas, IV.1
The medieval Christian authors spoke of the forest of the world, how confusing and dark life can be. In such a forest a light is needed, and to that light I dedicate my work: my Guru, Swami Muktananda.
I didnt learn Shaivism from books and in some sense I was taught Shaivism before I ever heard of it. I learned it by osmosis from my Gurus being. And when I began to read Shaivism it explained what I already knew.
While dedicating this book to my Guru, I must also salute the Self of all. As well, I offer my salutations to the supreme Devi, in all Her forms, who animates and enlivens me.
Finally, I salute that Shiva that lives in every one of you, my readers, as your own awareness. Please remember, dear ones, Shiva lives in every thought and feeling, in every breath, in every object, in every person. Do not dishonour Him by dishonouring yourself. The highest, most truly worthy expression of our common humanity is the search for the Self within. If something in these pages is useful to you in that search, my work is compensated.
Authors Note
The original texts of Kashmir Shaivism were written in the beautiful and powerful language of Sanskrit. Some of these ancient words, such as chakra, karma and maya, have long found their way into standard English dictionaries. For ease of reading in the main text, I have anglicised the spelling of Sanskrit words such as prakasha (light) and vimarsha (awareness) and have included a glossary. Likewise I have anglicised book titles which appear in their original Sanskrit form in the bibliography.
The appendices list many key sutras of Kashmir Shaivism in English and in transliterated Sanskrit with diacritical marks for pronunciation. The words are generally pronounced as in English except for a few guidelines:
the long a, as in balm |
the long i, as in sleeve |
the long u, as in school |
c | ch, as in chimney |
slightly aspirated, ha |
as in banyan |
with a trill, as in brrn |
, | sh |
Acknowledgments
This book is the result of the work of a team of people, a shakti chakra in Shaivite terms, whose many talents and specialised skills made it possible.
I am grateful to my editor, Nancy Jackson, for nursing the book through with clarity, calm and sensitivity.
Next I want to acknowledge Kali Nolle for her graphic design, including diagrams and the beautiful cover.
I want to express my gratitude to Jackie Bos, who came to the rescue at a critical time, and Kaymolly Morrelle. Their impeccable copy editing was indispensable.
I am grateful to Dr Isobel Crombie who did the early work, collecting and transcribing some of the talks that became part of the book, and also to Jo Hughson for her help with the Sanskrit transliterations.
I have to acknowledge Dylan Frusher for his charming sketch of the Headless One on page 83.
Finally, I am very grateful to Teri Giannetti without whose selfless dedication and one-pointedness it would simply not have been possible to complete the book on time or nearly as well.
I owe thanks to Ma Devi and the many members of the Shiva Ashram community, whose names cannot fit here, but fit easily in my heart, for helping to create a heaven on earth and an atmosphere in which Shaivite ideas and practices flow naturally.
Beyond all these, I would be remiss not to mention the international scholars on whose work I have drawn. Among them I should especially acknowledge Jaideva Singh, Mark Dyczkowski, Kamalakar Mishra, B.N. Pandit and Paul Muller-Ortega (especially for the long translation on pp. 233234). A special mention to my friends Dr Gary Witus for his feedback and suggestions and to Reverend Dr John Dupuche.
I want to acknowledge the great sages of Kashmir Shaivism at whose feet I sit, especially Abhinavagupta, Utpaladeva, Kshemaraja, Swami Lakshmanjoo and my Guru, Swami Muktananda.
Finally to Lord Shiva: all this is Your Grace, Your Shining, Your Gift to a dark age.
aya aktidaridra sasr ucyate

He is a bound soul who has poverty of Shakti.
With the unfoldment of his Shakti, however,
he becomes Shiva Himself.

Introduction
Consciousness Itself
This new and easy path has been shown by me exactly as it was given by my teacher. A person putting his feet here firmly, after realising himself to be the Creator of the Universe, becomes perfect, when he enters into unbroken identity with the state of Shiva.
Utpaladeva, Ishvara-Pratyabhijna IV.16
C onsciousness is the great unexplored area of life, the final frontier. It is the invisible but essential ingredient that even science approaches with fear and trembling. Yet one ancient philosophy has explored it completely and that philosophy, and Consciousness Itself, are the subject of this book.
Kashmir Shaivism is the study of Consciousness. Since Consciousness is infinite, so our study is without limits. Notice that I didnt say, human consciousness. Consciousness is One no matter where we find it, though its personalities are many. Look at your pet, your dog or cat. A pet lover feels that there is a conscious being there, somehow overlayed by catness or dogness.
Years ago one devotee of my Guru wept pathetically to me that his dog was not allowed in the ashram in India. He said, Hes a human being in a dogs body!
