Robert Ogilvie Crombie is probably best known as one of the seminal figures in the history of the Findhorn Foundation community in northern Scotland. He was the elderly Scottish gentleman who spoke with nature spirits. But there was much more to this mans life and work than just his association with Findhorn. As a scientist, hermetic magician, and a researcher of the psychic realms, he was in many ways a key figure in the history of esotericism in the twentieth century. His story is less-well known than it could be simply because he worked in solitude and privacy. He did not write books and did not take students or attempt to found a group or an esoteric school. When he shared some of his inner work with the world at large, he did so through the lens of the Findhorn community. In so doing, he exerted a powerful influence on the imagination and spiritual work of thousands of people around the globe, particularly in how they view humanitys relationship and responsibility to the natural world. For anyone interested in the history of Findhorn, the Western occult and magical traditions, or the life of a working adept, this book is a must-read.

Dedication

This book is dedicated to the memory of Ogilvie, friend and teacher, with the hope that his writings may lead my readers to experience the enlightenment that has come my way through association with this truly remarkable mystic.

Acknowledgements

I am indebted to my wife, Jean, for the patience and forbearance she displayed over the years when my time was inevitably split between attempting to support her and our burgeoning family and at the same time pursue the esoteric with Ogilvie. Coping with two young children and running the household with a partner who had one foot in this world and the other in the next was never going to make for an easy life.

I would also like to extend my thanks to all those presently and formerly associated with the Findhorn Community who have helped to bring this book to fruition, and especially to my editor, David Spangler, for his inspired commentary and suggestions.

Introduction

Robert Ogilvie Crombie is probably best known as one of the seminal figures in the history of the Findhorn Foundation community in northern Scotland. He was the elderly Scottish gentleman who spoke with nature spirits and whose exploits are chronicled in books such as The Gentleman and the Faun, (published as Meeting Fairies in North America), The Magic of Findhorn and the Findhorn Garden Story. When he was guided to share some of his inner work with the world at large, he did so through the lens of the Findhorn community. In so doing, he exerted a powerful influence on the imagination and spiritual work of thousands of people around the globe, particularly in how they view humanitys relationship and responsibility to the natural world.

I always had it in mind to provide an account of Ogilvies life, but it has taken me nigh on 35 years since his death in 1975 to put pen to paper. Viewed in retrospect, this tardiness is perhaps no bad thing, as so much has developed in recent years in the realms of psychic research, leading to a much greater awareness and understanding of the nature and workings of the unseen worlds. Where appropriate, I have therefore drawn on this more recent life-between-life (LBL) evidence, unavailable to Ogilvie during his lifetime, as many parallels exist between these and his own experiences; many of the aspects that puzzled him can now be more easily explained.

Part I of this book, therefore, is devoted solely and unashamedly to a consideration of the fundamentals and discoveries of this life-between-life (LBL) research, as first and foremost it has such primary applicability to all of our lives, as well as forming a framework for Ogilvies. I would urge my reader to give this topic particular attention as it will be referred to regularly throughout the remainder of the book and underpins many of the discussions. Further supportive evidence for the LBL findings is also presented in this section from the many reports from those having had near-death-experiences (NDE), and out-of-body experiences (OOB).

Throughout his 75 year life, and especially in his latter years, Ogilvie had many truly remarkable experiences of an other-worldly nature. By good fortune, he committed an account of most of these to paper, and I have now transcribed the vast bulk of them into print, largely for ease of reading as his handwriting at times verges on the illegible. In addition, much of the material was spread over a disparate collection of diaries and notebooks, and chronological order had become somewhat blurred. Part II, therefore, is comprised entirely of extracts from these journals, together with relevant descriptions, background information and comments. Part II is Ogilvies story.

The first chapter in Part II summarises Ogilvies lifehis outer life, that iswhile the remainder of the book is devoted to his inner dealings which were highly varied and extensive. With material of this nature, it is extremely difficult to follow a strict chronology, or even to tightly categorise by topic, and I would ask my reader to be patient when I inevitably stray now and again from conformity.

Where literal extracts are taken from Ogilvies saga, these are presented in inset format. The accompanying date is shown but in the order of year, month, and day (for example, 730421 would be the 21st April, 1973). Not particularly user friendly, but it computer sorts nicely. Where the date is immediately followed by an a, b or c and so on, it indicates different extracts from the same date. Within the extracts themselves, where I have added explanatory notes or comments, these are shown in square brackets, [].

Latterly Ogilvie, particularly through his involvement with the emergent Findhorn Community, was nicknamed ROC after the initials of his name. Although it has a bit of a harsh ring about it, it does convey an impression of solidity and reliability. Its adoption in the text, however, makes annotation much less cumbersome, and it can be quickly spotted. I have therefore used this abbreviation fairly liberally.

Part 1: Life Between Lives (LBL)

LBL investigation is accomplished through deep hypnosis of the subject. This approach has the considerable advantage that the between worldthe ethereal state between death in one life and incarnation in a subsequent onecan be examined in fine detail over a period of many hours (or from many such sessions amounting to days for that matter). The technique is similar in many respects to that used by the practitioners of past life recall with the exception that the hypnotic state of the subject needs to be deeper.

In the case of the hypnotised subject, it would seem that an active connective channel is established from the conscious mind, through the persons unconscious, and into the superconscious realm, allowing a two-way conversation or question and answer dialogue to take place with a minimum of information colouration; memory recall tends to be both extensive and accurate. As with all hypnosis, however, it is important for the hypnotist to frame questions in such a way that it will avoid leading the subject or creating false scenarios that the subject can build on. This situation does not appear to be such a major problem as normally believed; subjects can in fact be quite vehement in their refutation of certain suggestions which do not accord with the truth as they are witnessing it.
