Preface
In preparing this edition of Edmund Campion's four disputations at the Tower of London in 1581, I faced a number of difficult editorial choices. A few deserve brief comment. First, practical considerations about potential readers were among the most troublesome. For example, should an edition of these previously unpublished Catholic manuscripts of the debates be prepared and organized primarily to meet the expectations of academic specialists in the field? Or should they be designed somewhat differently to accommodate the practical needs and probable interests of a broader audience of readers? One's decision on this crucial matter radically alters the kind of text and the amount of information to be provided. The specialist, already familiar with the historical circumstances in England that led to the debates in 1581, needs little contextual information about the issues or the disputants. The non-specialist, however, may be unnecessarily confused by the debates if relevant historical background information is not provided.
Second, other considerations posed additional problems. What kind of text should be presented? And how much textual commentary is sufficient for readers to appreciate the significance of the debates? For example, the specialist expects to be provided with a critical text that remains as close as possible to the original manuscripts. Ideally, such a critical text would consist of photocopies of the manuscripts, together with detailed analytical commentary. However, if such a text and commentary were offered, the non-specialist, who is unfamiliar with Elizabethan handwriting, spelling, abbreviations, interpolations, and foreign languages, would be virtually denied access to the debates.
