This fascinating history of a literary and religious masterpiece explores the forces that obstructed and ultimately led to the decision to create an authorized translation, the method of translation and printing, and the central role the King James version of the Bible played in the development of modern English. In the sixteenth century, to attempt to translate the Bible into a common tongue wasnt just difficult, it was dangerous. A Bible in English threatened the power of the monarch and the Church. Early translators like Tyndale, whose work greatly influenced the King James, were hunted down and executed, but the demand for English Bibles continued to grow. Indeed it was the popularity of the Geneva Bible, with its anti-royalist content, that eventually forced James I to sanction his own, pro-monarchy, translation. Errors in early editions--one declared that thou shalt commit adultery--and Puritan preferences for the Geneva Bible initially hampered acceptance of the King James, but it went on to become the definitive English-language Bible. McGraths history of the King James Bibles creation and influence is a worthy tribute to a great work and a joy to read.

Acclaim for Alister McGrath's
IN THE BEGINNING

An absorbing narrative chronicling three centuries of cultural, religious, and political history. McGrath's engrossing book is a necessary read for anyone interested in understanding why [the King James] Bible stands apart from any other translation.

The Boston Globe

Breezy and anecdotal. Offers a helpful and detailed overview of the process of Bible translation.

The Washington Post Book World

McGrath's book condenses a library of research materials, impenetrable to anyone but a theologian and historian, to present a straight-forward, stirring, mercifully unsubtle account of a cultural icon we take for granted.

The Times (London)

Rightly esteemed as a standard of literary English, the King James Version has nonetheless been perennially misunderstood. Alister McGrath sets the record straight, with a sprightly narrative of how this translation was the product of sensibilities honed by the Renaissance and the Reformation.

Bruce Chilton, author of Rabbi Jesus: An Intimate Biography

A fascinating and informative story of the translation of the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible. McGrath skillfully and interestingly constructs the historical, political, economic, social, and religious backgroundthe tenor of the timesthat provided the impetus for this version. Certainly all modern Bible translators (including this one) owe a tremendous debt to the KJV and its translators. I enthusiastically recommend this book.

Kenneth L. Barker, executive director, NIV Translation Center, International Bible Society (retired)

Succeeds admirably in detailing the historical contextboth religious and politicalout of which the KJV grew.

National Review

Alister McGrath has written a learned, witty, and fascinating tale about the history of the King James Bibleits place in the developing English Bible tradition and its recognition as the noblest monument of English prose. For all readers and students of the Bible, this book will be an invaluable vade-mecum.

Fr. Joseph A. Fitzmyer, S.J., professor emeritus, Biblical Studies, Catholic, University of America

An engaging chronicle. This is a tale ripe for the telling.

I was born in 1953, the year of the coronation of Elizabeth II. Like every child born in Britain that year, I was given a copy of the Bible, by command of the queen. As a child, I often pored over the book, puzzled by its old-fashioned language, yet intrigued by the stories it told. It was a copy of the translation published in 1611, often referred to as the Authorized Version, but more widely known as the King James Bible, after the British king who ordered it to be produced.

As I grew older, I often wondered how the whole thing came about. How was the translation process started? Who were the people who had created it? What issues did they face? How did they go about producing the translation? How was it received? And why had Elizabeth II asked for this specific version of the Bible to be given to all born in the year of her coronation? What was so special about it?

As the years passed, the Bible I had been given as a child gradually fell to pieces. Its pages dropped out, one by one, and eventually it had to be thrown away. But the questions that puzzled me remained with me. Finally, nearly half a century after being given that book, I came to a decision. I would investigate the origins of the King James Bible, and tell the story of what I now knew to be a literary and religious classic. This book tells that tale, set against the backdrop of the tumultuous century of events which brought it into being. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed telling it.

INTRODUCTION

Picture 6

T he two greatest influences on the shaping of the English language are the works of William Shakespeare and the English translation of the Bible that appeared in 1611. The King James Biblenamed for the British king who ordered the production of a fresh translation in 1604is both a religious and literary classic. Literary scholars have heaped praise upon it. Nineteenth-century writers and literary critics acclaimed it as the noblest monument of English prose. In a series of lectures at Cambridge University during the First World War, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch declared that the King James Bible was the very greatest literary achievement in the English language. The only possible challenger for this title came from the complete works of Shakespeare. His audience had no quarrel with this judgment. It was the accepted wisdom of the age.
