PREFACE
Would you like to enjoy good health - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually? Would you like to increase your vitalityso that you can get the best out of your work and play? Would you like to haveclarity of thought and freshness of mind, as well as spiritual fulfillment?'This book will show you, with examples and exercises, how you can attain allthese goals - and more with Chi Kung.
Chi Kung, as qigong is pronouncedand traditionally spelt in English, is the esoteric art of energy training. This book will simplify the esoteric and make it comprehensible. It assumes noprior knowledge of Chi Kung: all terms and concepts are explained in a styleand vocabulary that Western readers can readily understand. But you will beintroduced, step by step, to all the important aspects of Chi Kung until, towards the end of the book, some fairly advanced concepts are introduced.
All the important dimensions of ChiKung are discussed, namely:
The History, Philosophy and Scope of Chi Kung
Chi Kung for Health and Longevity
Vitality for Sports, Sex and Youthfulness
The Internal Force of Martial Arts
The Training of the Wonderful Mind
The Supreme Achievement of Chi Kung
As the scope of Chi Kung described inthis book is extensive, you may select those sections that you find mostappropriate or helpful, leaving others for later use or simply to read forpleasure. Because of cultural, philosophical and other differences, somereaders may find certain descriptions unbelievable, even disagreeable. Sufficeit to say that most of the examples mentioned in the book are verified by mystudents' and my own experience, and those that are outside our personalknowledge are quoted from great teachers and reliable authorities. NeverthelessI would ask you not to accept anything in this book on faith or reputationalone, but to approach the suggested principles and practices with an openmind, and to assess their benefits only after giving them a fair trial.
It must be emphasized that Chi Kungis essentially an experiential, not just an intellectual, discipline. It is notenough just to read and understand what Chi Kung is (though that itself is verybeneficial); one must put in some practice if one is to appreciate and use theart fully. We need at least a few months of regular, consistent practice beforewe can even begin to play the piano competently - and a few months of practicebefore we could put on our clothes properly when we were young. It is thereforeunrealistic and unreasonable to expect any proficiency in Chi Kung, or any art,if there is insufficient training.
Chi Kung is non-religious: it canbe practiced by anyone without affecting their religious beliefs-or lack ofthem. At the more advanced levels it is spiritual - it transcends the physicalbut there are many people who practice and benefit tremendously from itsphysical level only, leaving out some or all of the emotional, mental andspiritual aspects.
