About the Author

Robin Kelly runs a medical practice in which he integrates Western, Eastern and modern mindbody concepts of health. He qualified as a doctor in London, moving to Auckland, New Zealand in the late 1970s.

Soon after starting in general practice, he started to practise and study acupuncture. Impressed by the safety and effectiveness of this ancient Chinese healing art, he studied its roots in traditional Chinese medicine. He became president of the New Zealand Medical Acupuncture Society, and by the early 90s had established a full time practice in Medical Acupuncture on Auckland's North Shore.

Since this time, Robin's practice has broadened to focus on the concept of deep healing, and the drawing up of individualized healing plans. He runs MindBody Healing workshops in New Zealand and overseas for the sufferers of chronic illness, health professionals, and the general public.

The Human Antenna is Robin's second book, and explores his interest in the science of consciousness, and the role intuition plays in our lives. He draws from his everyday experiences, explaining these exciting but sometimes bewildering concepts in a simple and entertaining way.

Robin is also a passionate musician and singer-songwriter, currently recording his third CD. His previous albums Black Ice (1998), and Silk and Knives (2002), have been featured on local and national radio stations, and he has performed live on national television. He has recently written a stage musical, Chakramor, a celebration of the growth of human consciousness.

Robin works from home with his wife, Trish, a registered nurse and midwife. They have three children, a lively Cavoodle puppy, and two beautiful but emotionally distant cats.

When not working, he can be found pottering around either his garden or the golf course.

His overriding ambition is to be the last person on earth to own a mobile phone.

Acknowledgments

I am indebted to those special people who have gifted me the space from which this book has emerged.

In particular, to my eldest daughter Sophie, who graciously allowed me to convert her orange bedroom into my writing retreat.

And to Gabrielle Graham, who together with the staff of the Student Health and Counseling Center at Albany's Massey University, unselfishly allowed me to cut back on my duties during the winter of 2005.

Throughout the book, I mention many friends and colleagues who have guided me in my life and work. It is heartening to experience at first hand the support now in place for all doctors who are compelled to extend the boundaries of healthcare, and to embrace new paradigms of healing. I owe special thanks to Miriam and Gerald Gibb, and Julie and Tim Ewer, who continue to inspire me with their wisdom and cheerful encouragement.

I am also grateful to Dawson Church and Courtney Arnold at Energy Psychology Press. I am fortunate indeed to have found you all. Special thanks also to artist Karla Vink who has converted my rough sketches into such clear and satisfying images, and to cover designer Victoria Valentine for her stunning work.

I am also grateful for the unending patience and literary skills of my editors, Graeme Beals and Paula Reid, who have helped make writing The Human Antenna such a happy and fulfilling experience.

Introduction
The journey Begins

This book is an accurate, truthful account of my personal experiences. It is not a textbook in the traditional sense, as textbooks reveal little of the writer. Rather they separate the writer from the text, the subject from the object. I am unable to make these distinctions; my life and my health, and the lives and health of my family and of those seeking my help over the years are so delicately entwined that their separation would undoubtedly represent a departure from this truth.

Similarly any knowledge I have gleaned from any sources, be they academic lectures, learned journals, all manner of books or Internet sites, reflects the warm generosity of others who have shared their wisdom unselfishly with the world. My intent is to fully acknowledge all these wise researchers, but also to avoid weighty and distracting lists of references. I have strived to achieve a happy balance here, erring on the side of simplicity. Much of my working life has involved translating the hardearned knowledge of others into a language I can personally understand. There is a good chance that by passing on my personal interpretations of this universal wisdom I can be a help to others.

I am also grateful for those who have given me permission to use their own powerful healing stories in this book. Hopefully I have retained their essence as, for confidentiality reasons, I have used alternative names, nationalities and locations. I am grateful for the confidence these generous people have shown in me; they come from all walks of life and this book would not be possible without them. Every day I hear stories that are extraordinary; experiences I would have regarded years ago as supernatural, appear now as perfectly natural.

The short biography that opens this book highlights certain events in my personal and early practising life that eased open the door to this place of wonder; episodes that gave me the confidence to pursue topics in an intimate setting that may have been viewed by some as being taboo. I have taken care in my work to remain an integral member of the medical profession. I perceive my role to be more helpful if I maintain clinical competence within the framework of `orthodox' medicine. This somehow has helped reassure those who have felt destabilized by their experiences - `Please tell me; I'm not mad, am I doctor?'

I can empathize with them as I too have asked myself such questions, and at times felt the judgment of a conservative profession.

In retrospect, the experiences that have proved formative and the most pivotal have not been the dramatic `road to Damascus' peak experiences. Rather they have been everyday events, sequences and synchronicities. An epiphany occurs far more rarely - and then as a vivid confirmation of wisdom already held within. As we begin to experience the spiritual dimensions in everyday life, the ordinary becomes wonderful, the mundane miraculous. Further confirmation is no longer needed, as we are now tuned to perfection.

My personal experiences as recounted here are no more nor less valid than your own. Each of us has our unique, compelling story and I hope this book encourages you to examine your life's experiences and to draw your own conclusions. I am sure you will find your own special journey equally fascinating.
