Dedication
To my strong independent and hopeful nephew Dorian, I love you. I have seen you experience so many things that have crushed the average man. One day you will realize how amazing you really are, I truly believe you will change the world and make it a better place. Dont be afraid to let your light shine know that I love you and am proud of the man you're becoming. Never stop growing.
-Uncle Rob
You were created in the image of greatness.
All of who you are and hope to be is wrapped up in your ability to believe in who and what you are. You are a king that has the DNA of the divine running through your veins. There is nothing you cant do! Like Adam, lookout and give name and definition to the world that you will have dominion over. What do you see? Often what we see externally is a reflection of what we see and feel internally. What do you see? Are you blinded by the fear of failure, pain, or inadequacy? What do you see? Is your vision blocked by the void inside that leaves you empty and desolate after youve given your best to only find out you're still just second best? You are not alone. Embrace this book as light and love. It is our hope that after reading this literary work that you would be enlightened and know your full worth. Life is filled with swift transitions and learning how to navigate them is critical. Oftentimes men go through life wondering am I good enough Whats wrong with me? Am I worth loving because they did not have the information or tools, they needed to make it through their journey? The information that is mentioned in this book is not superficial. It will not help you build your financial empire; it will not bring you physical riches or fame. This is the type of information that enriches the soul. The purpose of this book is to create and awaken your internal compass to becoming the best version of yourself. Our desire is for you to be whole. To be the type of man that when you wake up the world says crap, hes still alive. To be the type of man that hungers for something more in life than just his next dollar or opportunity. A man of substance, a man of class, a man full of integrity, courage, wisdom, grace, purpose, identity, patience, and love. The type of man thats committed to changing the world to make it a better place. We believe you are that man.
Chapter 1
You are a man
W hat does it mean to be a man? It is a question that many of my friends and I have pondered over. We have spent countless years trying to define our maleness and in the process, made a whole lot of mistakes while encountering even more growing pains. What has made it so difficult for us and many others, is the dichotomy between what we think a man is and what those around us expect us to already be and know? The funny thing about all this is that I have had some of the same best friends for over a decade and we have been there for each other through the thick and the thin. When we first became friends, none of us had much of anything. We just had a bunch of hopes and dreams and the drive to do well for ourselves. All of us came from somewhat similar backgrounds: we either didnt know our fathers or lacked positive male role models in our lives for one reason or another. So, there we were, with a whole bunch of hopes and dreams but no real road map on how to get there. We sort of assumed that we had everything we needed to ensure our success but weren't quite sure what success even looked like. But we knew that anything was better than where we had been. Through the years, all three of us would go to college, climb corporate ladders, become influential thinkers, famous musicians, husbands, and fathers, but still didn't have a clue of what it really meant to be a man. During our usual Brothers hangout, we would vent and discuss monumental life events and challenges we had experienced, to put all of our heads together to come up with the best rational, solutions to our problems or questions.
We wondered how much money, land, college degrees or success does one need to be viewed and/or even feel like a man? What is the body count of sexual conquests that will qualify you to be considered a man? Does one obtain manhood by having children and getting married?
In modern western culture, manhood and masculinity have continuously evolved and are constantly being redefined as time goes on. This makes it extremely difficult to actually pinpoint an accurate example or define what it means to truly be a man by societal standards. The understanding around this concept also looks drastically different depending on the status and stature of the individual you're asking. After interviewing countless men on my podcast,' I Am Man', my working definition of a man is a male that is committed to the journey of becoming. A male does not just wake up into manhood but rather goes through key processes and stages that enable him to choose to become a man.
When I w a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I rnd like a child. When I became a man, I ut th ways f hldhd behind me. - 1 Crnthn 13:11
A mn, we've all questioned and wondered. As young b, we anticipate it. Thn m th tng years and w try t rv t. A young dult, w'r not ur f w've rhd t yet, nd vn whn w bm old mn, th qutn can still bm unlr. Wht mk a man?
The world offers conflicting views of what it means to be a man. Mn, wmn, ld r young, vrn will conceivably include dffrnt dfntn that touch on different qualities f mnhd, uh as urg, determination, a of working knowledge n rt, nd, rfrbl, a finely tailored ut.
