Terminology and Transliteration
Ving tsun itself is the romanization of two Chinese words. Throughout the training there are a great number of words that are used to describe techniques and movements in this Chinese martial art.
Foshan, Canton, and Hong Kong are the historical origins of ving tsun from the Ip Man family. The terms in the book will, therefore, use the Cantonese terms used by Ip Man and his kung fu family. The romanization of these words from English to Cantonese will use the Yale format of transliteration. At the back of the book is a dictionary of these terms, along with the Mandarin transliteration and original Chinese characters.
Of notable exception is the term ving tsun. Grandmaster Ip Man named the style he taught as ving tsun, so I will continue to use that transliteration when referring specifically to the style taught by Ip Man and handed down through qualified instructors. I will use the more generic transliteration wing chun when referring to a style that has been changed from Ip Mans style or that has no affiliation with any specific pure lineage.
Read Me First
To reach the highest levels of every martial art, practitioners eventually turn their focus inward, having realized that their core personality has a significant influence on how well they perform their craft.
Volume 2 was written to help point a path to reach the higher aspects of ving tsun and of martial arts in general. This is a book for advanced students. If readers are not at a certain point in their martial careers, much of the content in this book will not be appealing. Ive also assumed that readers have a high level of skill in the basics, so descriptions and details outlined in the first volume are not duplicated in this one. However, where required or important, specific mention is made. The techniques of the final three forms contain or are based on fundamentals that should already have been mastered. The two Wing Chun Compendium volumes make a complete set, giving the reader a complete picture of the system.
Why I Wrote Volume 2
I strongly believe that much of the value of the system comes from working through the first three forms and associated drills. I deliberated about whether I should write a second volume to cover the last three forms since the first three forms alone will take a lifetime to master. I pondered about how much more needed to be written.
