Father Barths impressive and distinguished study adds significantly to our understanding and appreciation of the range and acuity of Coleridges mind... The strength of analysis, the nature and kinds of writings surveyed, as well as the scrupulously documented bibliographic information make this a helpful work for the serious (and ambitious) beginning student of Colerdige and a valuable resource for the seasoned scholar who has been waiting for a comprehensive synthesis of Coleridges religious views. -Criticism

Preface
This study is an attempt to present in an organized way, as Coleridge himself did not, his matured views on Christian doctrine. They are found in a wide variety of places: in published works like the Aids to Reflection; in his numerous unpublished notebooks, now in process of publication; in marginal notes on works of theology and doctrine; in the still unpublished manuscript of his so-called "Opus Maximum"; in letters; and even in the random conversation recorded by his nephew in Table Talk. At times these passages take the form of a fairly lengthy discussion of one or another doctrine; at other times they are only hints and guesses, suggestions or promises of a treatise to come. Generally speaking, Coleridge's views on Christian doctrine are not organized, but they have within themselves the principles of organization. The present work, therefore, is one primarily of synthesis.
The only other recent work to treat extensively of Coleridge's religious ideas, James Boulger's Coleridge as Religious Thinker, had quite a different purpose. It was concerned with Coleridge's "religious philosophy" or even his "philosophy of religion." It was a work of analysis rather than of synthesis. Although my aim is different, Boulger's study has been helpful to me at several points, and I am happy to acknowledge my indebtedness.
