PREFACE TO THE 1997 EDITION
As I look through my window in Tokyo I am amazed and shocked by the communications explosion. Harried executives and ardent young lovers talk into mobile phones as they walk along the street. My friends are getting limitless knowledge from the Internet; they communicate with people all over the world by E-mail and FAX. Nobody fails to read the morning paper. Little children are playing with computers. Eyes glued to the television, boys and girls are sophisticated at the age of ten. We are overwhelmed with information about everybody and everything.
