Preface
For some time past brethren in different quarters of the Church felt that there was need of more uniformity, in subject matter used and methods followed, in the instruction of applicants for church membership. Some of our brethren were so impressed with this need that they brought the matter before the Southwestern Pennsylvania Church Conference, which in regular annual session at the Weaver Church, near Johnstown, Pa., Aug. 14, 15, 1930, adopted the following recommendations: "We recommend that a booklet be prepared with a view to unifying the subject matter to be used in the instruction of applicants for church membership. We suggest that the booklet be submitted to the Publication Board for publication in the regular manner. For the carrying out of this recommendation we suggest the following committee: John L. Horst, W. C. Hershberger, and J. M. Nissley."
Some time after their appointment the committee met and made plans for carrying out the work that was thus assigned to them. It was decided that the book should not be too large and yet include a comprehensive statement of Christian doctrines, ordinances, and principles, giving outlines with Scripture references, practical comments, and questions upon the subjects treated. This plan has been followed throughout the book with a few modifications. It has

been the aim to treat the subjects as briefly as possible, consistent with giving the information that it was thought most important for the applicant for church membership to have.
Considerable time and labor were put into the work of preparing the material for this little book. Numerous works on the subjects treated were consulted, and the manuscript was submitted to the Publishing Committee of the Mennonite Publication Board for criticism and approval. For all the help received from these sources we wish to give recognition and to tender our thanks. We trust that the finished book may, under the blessing of God, at least in a measure meet the need which it was designed to supply. And as we send it forth on its mission we pray that the Lord may bless it to the building up of His Church here below.

Publisher's Preface
We are grateful to God and to our constituency for the way in which this little book has been received and used by those in the church whose duty and privilege it is to lead beginners in the Christian life into the fullness of blessing which every Christian should enjoy. With the exception of a few changes which were made for the second printing, this printing is the same as the first. May the Lord continue to bless and use this little volume in building up believers in Christ and thus to the honor and glory of God.
