Preface
This study began to take shape as I increasingly realized that American women need not and, indeed, do not totally reject their religious heritage, despite the tensions they experience with it, when it comes to literary practice. A common feminist attitude today is to disparage most Protestant religious traditions as patriarchal and to view them as phenomena that religiously and historically astute women can only reject, radically revise, or, at best, live with in anger and resentment. But my own personal and literary experiences have led me to an alternative belief. Despite the patriarchal biases of American Protestant Christianity as it has been historically expressed, that religious tradition and the Bible itself offer vehicles through which female writers, thinkers, and potential speakers can be affirmed and even empowered in their practice. That empowerment may be motivated by biblical theologya theology of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration that emphasizes the creational value of all people and their voices, regardless of their gender, race, or class. Certainly, American evangelicalism affirms the priesthood of all believers, as Emily Dickinson well knew. In increasing numbers, evangelical women today are discovering the liberating possibilities of the Scriptures, even as they remain within their evangelical circles.
