The University Press of Colorado is pleased to present Eduardo Matos Moctezuma's Life and Death in the Templo Mayor as the second publication in the new series "Mesoamerican Worlds." This book by Mexico's finest archaeologist, who coordinated the astonishing excavation of the Templo Mayor from 1978 to 1982, explores the persuasive duality of Aztec religion and society, "coincidentia oppositorium" of life and death, war and agriculture, aggression and nurture at the ceremonial center of Tenochtitlan. Utilizing the offerings, sculpture, painted and written evidence, "Moctezuma Tercero," as he is affectionately called in Mexico, illuminates the ideology and cosmology of the place the Aztecs called the foundation of heaven. No one can do a better job of introducing us to the mighty Aztecs and the ways in which they symbolized their experiences in Mesoamerican worlds.
