Since this book began at the University of Pennsylvania as a dissertation on the normaliens of 18901904, subsequent versions broader in scope have developed slowly, and I have accumulated many financial, intellectual, and personal debts. The individuals who have helped me so generously, however, bear no responsibility for the errors and limitations of this study.
For his advice and kindness, I am grateful to the late Otakar Odlozilik, who supervised the dissertation completed in 1967. Grants awarded by the FulbrightHays Commission, the American Philosophical Society, and the SUNY Research Foundation as well as a sabbatical leave from SUNY College at Brockport made it possible for me to carry out research on the project in Paris. While many librarians and archivists in France and the United States have been marvelously sympathetic and helpful, I would like to thank in particular: Pierre Petitmengin, Louis Bergeron, and JeanClaude Chamboredon, who facilitated my work in the library and archives of the Ecole Normale; Serge Hurtig, Georgette Latrabe, and AnneMarie de Thomas, who arranged for me to use the library and archives of the Institut d'Etudes Politiques; and Chantal de TourtierBonazzi of the Archives Nationales, who has been so generous over many years with professional advice and moral support.
Others shared valuable insights about the Ecole Normale and its graduates. Madame Lucien Herr, who died in 1980, permitted me to see letters received by Lucien Herr, and on several occasions shared her own memories of her husband's life. Pierre Jeannin helped me to select a list of Normale's alumni for interviews; I wish to thank those men and women for taking the time to grant interviews or reply to correspondence.
